Degenerate

DEGENERATE tries its best to live up to the sleaziness of its title and subject matter of extreme sex, and indeed, with an over-the-top performer like Mila and with former gangbang queen Jasmin St. Claire, I thought that there was a good chance it would succeed. But as directed by Australian John T. Bone, this movie is more silly than sleazy, and more detached and cold as opposed to nasty. With only four measly scenes and a one hour, fifteen minute running time, DEGENERATE really is no more erotic or appealing than your average, competent adult movie. And unless you are a fan of the self-promoting Jasmin St. Claire, there may be very little reason to add this DVD to your next shopping spree, especially with all the other great releases making its way to the market (another Adult DVD Empire reviewer gave WHACK ATTACK --- a video produced by the aptly named Extreme Associates -- a well-deserved top rating and that video easily trumps this one when it comes to sizzling hardcore action).

DEGENERATE at least makes no pretense to carrying a plot. The movie begins with a cutely dressed aspiring porn performer Mila fawning over Ms. St. Claire, who promptly tells her to "fuck off" (somehow, her behavior seemed to perfectly fit her real-life personality). Then we get into the sex, with Jasmin doing the wild thing with some unidentifiable guy in some darkly lit, fetish room. Although I have no complaints about Jasmin's sexual acrobatics, especially the way she takes anal and an oral cumshot without batting an fake eyelash, there is something completely dispassionate about how she performs, which makes her two scenes in this video seem absolutely clinical. Of course, it does not help that the director also shoots in eccentric settings in a shaky attempt to evoke atmosphere and tension. Too many shadows, strange furnishings and distracting set designs only add to the emotional detachment of the sex scenes. The movie does not seem depraved as it does depressed.

Candy Apples performs with two guys, and even submits to the rather unusual act (unless its an Anabolic or Diabolic video) of an anal double penetration, which again seems more curious than erotic. Mila does the same in her guy-girl-guy scene, but she is far more subdued in this video than in others. Video quality is generally okay, so long as there is proper lighting. There are times when scenes get a little too dark, and the result is a storm of grain which obscures the action. There are no detectable sound problems. The below-average extras on the disc are the usual photo gallery, web-site information, and chapter selection.

There is no doubt that with an abundance of oral and facial cumshots, sodomizing, and wet blowjobs, DEGENERATE does deliver the hardcore. But the overall product can't even compare to similar titles like Diabolic's PENETRATION or LEWD CONDUCT series. Given the choice between DEGENERATE, and some random video from another video company, I would take my chances with the latter.

Three of the four sex scenes in Degenerate are excellent and one is very good. However, the quality of the lighting and the video leave me disappointed. Scene one is very dark--so dark that it's sometimes hard to make out the action--and the shadow areas are grainy and pixelated. The lighting in Scene Two is too yellow, making Candy Apples look a bit jaundiced. I really enjoyed Scene Two featuring Candy Apples and two guys (one I recognize as Guy DiSilva). Candy, who I don't think I've seen before, is a buxom redhead with "Candy's" tattooed on her right tit and "Apples" on her left. Quite appropriate! She's also nasty as hell. The scene was also shot in a very odd set: confetti covers the floor and the only furniture is a reflective-topped bench.
