Bloopers

Beginning with the cover shot of Deidre Holland sporting a very goofy, but fitting, expression while she lies seductively naked and poised with a vibrator, it's easy to tell the theme of Video Team's BLOOPERS (as if the title alone wasn't revealing enough). With a running-time of slightly over an hour, and absolutely no extras to speak of (I don't consider a "Scene Selection" option and a few internet and phone sex ads to be true bonus materials), this DVD is rather light on content even for what is essentially a compilation video.

Certainly, with the past and current success of all those blooper television programs, and practical joke videos, dirty movies seem like the ideal genre in which to derive truly funny outtakes. But since most of the porn video medium is already known for its bargain-basement production values, amatuerish direction and poor acting, the laughs are already inherent in the finished product. Furthermore, many of today's DVDs have already made outtakes and "behind the scenes" featurettes standard with the main feature, so to see the occasional blunder, crack-up, forgotten lines, or directorial interference really isn't unique anymore.

Nevertheless, Video Team has done a pretty good job of gathering up some old clips and more recent releases (circa 1993) for this program. Hosted by the very cute PJ Sparxx, and the obnoxiously hammy Jonathan Morgan, BLOOPERS of course focuses exclusively on clips from the Video Team library. None of the material is especially side-splitting; at best, the clips are merely interesting. Chances are the people making the mistakes in front of the camera are laughing harder than you ever will watching this DVD. Moreoverm PJ and Jonathan aren't the most charismatic hosts for this kind of program, despite their most strained and painfully obvious efforts to be spontaneous and fun-loving. Their chemisty is about as exciting as mixing salt and water, with Mr. Morgan somehow believing that he is more talented than he truly is.

While it's enjoyable to see actresses like Amber Lynn, Stacy Donovan and Candi Evans (all three of whom are sorely underrepresented on the DVD market), this video focuses more on recent actresses of the early nineties. However, the problem with focusing only on one company's catalog of movies is that we never get to see anything from the classics, or truly popular titles, from other studios. Outtakes from THREE WIVES are featured prominently, but does anyone actually remember that video (actually I do, but only for Debi Diamond's girl-girl scene with PJ Sparxx)? Some of these clips go on for a little too long, which was probably done for the benefit of stretching the runnning time.

Nevertheless, this is porn after all, and viewers have a right to expect some good use to "cum" out of this disc, and indeed, BLOOPERS offers three full length hardcore vignettes, ostensibly so the audience can compare the bloopers with a final edit of the scene...whatever. In any event, there is some good old fashioned sex going on between PJ and Mark Davis in a locker room fuck and suck (predictably, it's from THREE WIVES), as well as an enjoyable session between hardbodied Tiffany Mynx and Don Hart (aka Mike Horner). However, my favorite scene, and the only reason why this video rises above average, is due to a hot and heavy lesbian affair between Deidre Holland and Flame from NIGHT AND DAY (a video which featured the original "un-bloopered" cover of this disc). Flame was an all-natural red-headed cutie with milky skin and freckles who had a fan-following before she quit the biz. And of course, Deidre Holland appeared in some of the best porn movies ever, including BAD HABITS and CHAMELEONS. They indulge in plenty of deep, wet-kissing, and lotsa hard pussy-eating which had me satisfied that this DVD was a (reluctant) keeper. It's not the most artistically photographed scene I have ever witnessed (Flame's skin looks whiter than the Joker's in every shot), but it is far better than most of the toy-obsessed, unimaginative and passionless lesbian scenes which are obligatorily inserted in most of today's videos.

Video and audio quality is very good. The DVD packaging boasts that this video collection was "taken from the original masters," which is good news for future Video Team releases (especially all the Leena movies, which they apparently have locked somewhere away in their video vaults; there is an outtake from GOING PRO, one of her earliest features, where she looks sexier than hell!).

For anyone who might think that this disc would be a good novelty to show at a party or get-together (assuming your guests wouldn't think any less of you for displaying porn so prominently), I would avoid the potential boredom, and play a mainstream movie like MIDNIGHT RUN or TOP SECRET! for better entertainemt. But because of the enthusiastic work by Deidre and Flame, I was willing to make shelf space for this DVD in my ever-growing collection.
