Wherever You're Going...I'm Going Your Way
Sometimes, even I get surprised by porn movies.
Director Francois Clousot's Tiffany's proceeds like a lot of movies in the couples' genre. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl are both involved in other relationships. Boy and girl realize they love each other.
The difference here is that boy (Eric Masterson) and girl (Jessica Drake) don't hook up at the end. They don't even stay together. I didn't see that coming, and Clousot's Casablanca-like ending to Tiffany's shows the kind of story-telling "guts" that I haven't seen in about 99 percent of the adult movies I watch.
The only thing preventing Tiffany's from being a porn classic, is that Clousot waits too long to get to the interesting part of his story. More than half of the movie's length is simply devoted to the standard kind of stuff we see in most porn flicks: with Eric's character (a struggling writer) trying to re-spark his passion in life; while his neighbor (Jessica) has fun and parties next door.
The story begins to get interesting when we see a mysterious stranger (The Visitors' Thomas Priest in a non-sex role) lurking outside Jessica's apartment. We soon learn that it's her husband...and he wants her back. Of course, by this point in the movie, Eric and Jessica realize that they might be right for each other, and the heartbreak comes when they also realize that they'd never work as a couple.
Of course, a lot of the readers out there don't care about the storyline, and just want to know what the sex is like. Well, it's decent for a couples' movie, without any real stand-out couplings. The first sex scene is a nice blowjob-only teaming between Demi Delia (in her first boy/girl pairing on camera) and veteran Randy Spears, that concludes with a nice-sized load all over Demi's mouth and chin. Eric has two scenes in the movie, one with real-life partner Wendy Divine (here credited under her old stage name Maya); and a threesome with Kelly Kline and Kirsten Price. As for Jessica, she has a pairing with Barrett Blade; as well as a threesome scene involving Brooke and Brad Armstrong. There's also a lesbian scene (the last sex scene in the movie) between Wendy's character and Samantha Ryan.
I usually don't discuss cinematography in my adult reviews, but there's a particular shot in the movie that bears mentioning because it's either well-designed or one of those "happy accidents" that really pays off. The climatic (and final) scene between Jessica and Eric takes place on a Los Angeles rooftop at night, with lights in the background. Nearly at the exact moment Jessica leaves Eric, there's a light in the distance that turns off. Now I have no idea if Clousot planned that or if he just got lucky, but it's one of the best moments I've seen in an adult film - ever. It really adds to the sense of loss for Eric's character, and it's one of the few images from an adult movie that I'll probably always remember. It's a great moment.
As for the DVD itself, the movie is presented in anarmorphic widescreen with a 5.1 Dolby track. Extras on the disc include a 19 ½ minute behind the scenes featurette; a bonus scene between Jessica and Barrett Blade taken from the movie House Sitter; a 7-minute interview with the director; slide shows; six trailers for other Wicked releases; and the typical promo materials that Wicked slaps onto most of its DVD product.
Women and couples alike should love Tiffany's. It's not your typical porno, and I loved the fact that it didn't go for the "easy" ending. Had Jessica and Eric's characters gotten together at the end, it might have made for a hot scene, but been a pretty forgettable porno. Instead, we get something pretty special here...and while the overall movie isn't quite good enough to get a top-notch score from me, there's no denying that Tiffany's falls into the "must-see" category for porn movies.
