A Clever Script Elevates Lust In America

By Spooky
Cash Markman's Lust In America is a great example of how good adult movies can be made on a low budget. It's obvious that Markman didn't get a lot of money to shoot his story, but a great script combined with some talented actors helps make Lust In America an enjoyable watch.

Joel Lawrence and Elizabeth X play (what else?!) a couple of pornstars who are becoming dissatisfied with their careers. So Joel decides to buy a Winnebago, take his nest egg ("It will last the rest of our lives...assuming we don't live too long!" Joel quips.) and head out on the open road to discover America.

Their journey takes them to a run-down gas station (being serviced by Anthony Crane), and while Joel is getting gas, Elizabeth wanders off to a card game being played by Mike Horner and Michael J. Cox, where she promptly loses all her and Joel's money. So Elizabeth does what any loyal wife would do: she offers up her body in exchange for cash. Once Joel finds out about it, he states "You performed sexual favors for money...do you have any idea what that makes you?!" "Yes," Elizabeth replies, "A Porn Star."

It's the smart humor that keeps Lust In America rolling. There's plenty of one-liners for the viewing audience, and plenty of in-jokes for us in the industry. One of my favorite jokes occurs when Joel tries to get the money back from the two redneck card players and threatens to move into town if he doesn't get the cash back. "You don't want us moving here. Porn people ruin a community...just ask the people in Chatsworth!"

Of course, there's plenty of hot sex as well, including the threesome between Mike, Michael and Elizabeth which concludes in a pair of facials for the lovely Miss X. There's also a fairly hot lesbian scene with Envy and Gina Ryder. But I should also warn viewers that the final sex segment is one between Ron Jeremy and Alexandra Nice in which Alexandra licks chocolate cake from Ron's cock. Is everyone else as hungry now as I am? Yeah, that's what I thought...

Sadly, Markman's above-average title gets a below-average treatment on DVD, as has each and every movie released under the Dreamland (as well as Erotic Angel...they are both K-Beech studios) banner. The video and audio is only average and the features give us a chapter selection, a photo gallery and a website promo, which is front loaded on the DVD and impossible to skip over (although the fast forward button works, so have your remotes ready!).

If Lust In America had been made with the kind of budget that a Wicked or Vivid movie gets, it probably would have been a huge hit on DVD and video. As it is, it still got the attention of AVN, being nominated last year for Best Sex Comedy. It's up there with the best work Cash Markman has done, and if you can forgive the poor transfer and low budget, it's going to provide you with a pretty enjoyable evening of entertainment.

What were they thinking?

While you're battling for control of your DVD player (Dreamland makes you watch a few minutes of their own fluff before you can get to the menu), notice the cover of No Man's Land 26 with Felecia and Dee float across the screen. That would be much more worth your money than, well, whatever this is.

Lust in America, a movie no one involved seemed to care about, features the usually great Bridgette Kerkove, alongside a few other beauties, which, it seems, Dreamland doesn't want me to identify. The chapters are labeled by number, and there isn't anything in the way of bios or the such. You have to watch the painful opening credits to figure this out, and it's Gina Ryder and Envy that put on the best show. Gina Ryder is the best here, a hot brunette with a great body. She's in a great lez scene, but the camera angles are so poor, you come away from it thinking you didn't see anything. Great breasts, though.

The credits themselves are in mono, the music only on the right channel. That's one channel too many, as they seem to have paid the house band from the Holiday Inn to record the theme music.

Elizabeth X stars in the first scene, going down on some guy that keeps mumbling "oh, oh yeah" over and over. Elizabeth gives great form, but the camera angles are uniformly poor, ruining it.

The plot, as it were, is that this first scene is taking place on a porno set. The director is there, looking bored (not as bored as you'll be), and it gives the crew an excuse, I guess, to screw up the shots. It's suck/lick/fuck, the guy finally cums, and we don't have to listen to his incessant moaning anymore. Thankfully. Ron Jeremy makes an almost humorous cameo at the end of the scene, but even the master himself can't save this.

Bridgette Kerkove is in the midst of some bad acting, getting eaten out by some guy. She shows off her excellent oral skills, with a reasonably good fucking for afters. There's some good anal, with the money shot on the ass. Not bad, Bridgette.

"We don't have to take anyone's shit from this industry anymore" is what the guy says when he buys a mobile home. Does that mean the movie's over? Nope. Damn.

Oh, there's a strip poker threesome here for no apparent reason, but don't worry... you'll fast forward through it.

Gina and Envy start their scene, the camera far too close for the great nipple licking. There's no perspective... it would be so much nicer zoomed out just a bit. Envy goes down on Gina's fabulous body, but the pussy licking is marred by poor camera shots, thanks mostly to the poor choice of locale. I tried to like this scene (the only erection inducer in here), but the bad camerawork conspired against it.

Then they move over to a jetski (?) and Gina goes down on Envy. It's interesting how you can hear two girls moan (clearly, at that), while one is buried in the other. The camera stays on angle where we can actually see something for a bit, but that doesn't last long. Gina sits on Envy's face, not that we can see it, and there's some nice moaning. There's a decent 69, but nothing worth writing home about. It could have been so much better.

Hey, Ron's back! There's some action with food here, a bit weird, and some decently bloated action. A facial polishes it off, the best shot piece in the feature.

The extras are pretty much a joke. You can skip to chapters, there's a slide show, and a trailer. Woo hoo.

At least it's over. From the garage band imitation of Joe Satriani to camera angles fresh from someone's basement, Dreamland should be embarrassed by this. A personal note of thanks to Gina Ryder for at least giving me something to look at, but the whole product isn't worth your money. Fans of Bridgette will be disappointed by her appearance being so brief, and anyone else should, sorry Gina, should just move along.

Lighten up and enjoy the ride.

AVN nominated this movie in 2000 for Best Comedy and, I was told, it came in second, beating out my own "Prisoner of Sex," which you guys (Spooky anyway) loved. And I love "Lust In America"! Joel Lawrence and Elizabeth X are both great in this, and so is Anthony Crane when he teaches Joel how to collect semen from pigs. I've had more compliments from people in the industry (actors and other directors) on this title than any other, with the exception of the "Sex Trek" series ("XXX Trek", as Dreamland calls it). I learned long ago that you can't please everyone, but how can one person's opinion be so far off from so many others? To anyone with a sense of humor, enjoy this movie. The girls are great to look at, too (including one of my favorites, Envy). - Cash Markman
