I am thrilled to see this movie finally make it to DVD. It is one of my favorite adult movies ever. Though often overlooked by fans and critics amidst the myriad of classics that have come from John Stagliano and Evil Angel, Mystic Pieces stands out for me. It is an emotionally gripping movie that offers more than just the usual sex scenes. It also features a young Tori Welles in a performance that helped vault her to super stardom. You have to remember that this was pretty much pre-gonzo so watching a woman this beautiful give this sort of energetic performance. Her three-way scenes with Tom and Britt are fantastic even if they are broken up. The three on one finale still works all these years later. Tori was never hotter than she is in this scene. Joining Tori in this classic film are Britt Morgan, Brandy Alexandre, Victoria Paris, Cheri Taylor and Trinity Loren. Brandy plays John's wife and brings a great vulnerability to the role. She also brings a spectacular ass. Britt is perfect as the controlling, bitchy movie exec who always gets what she wants. Watching it now, there are times when Mystic Pieces seems a bit dated. We are certainly used to a porn landscape where something like Fashionistas can combine tension, emotion and scorching sexuality. Still Mystic Pieces is a ground breaking classic that tells a story, brings emotion to virtually every scene and lays the groundwork for countless gonzo features that would follow. I would be curious to see how John would shoot this movie today. It would be interesting to see this story told with sex scenes like we get today.
