He's outspoken, he's provocative and he even fronts a band called Society One. Inarguably, Matt Zane is a poignant figure in contemporary adult filmmaking - love'em or hate'em. Zane's idea of porn involves fusing Generation-X elements, like music, attire and attitude, with raw "smut". The final product created by this sort of porn alchemy is usually a rough edged, visual semblance of MTV style branded as "wide-audience-friendly" notion. Dabbling in many facets of adult video formats, Matt Zane has created everything from feature films, complete with storylines, fight scenes and personal non-sex appearances, to raunchy uninhibited gonzo's to wall-to-wall productions - like Cubby Holes #3.

In this third installment to the Cubby Holes series Zane provides us with a primarily anal-themed quartet of mini-features. Four sets of one on one action comprised of male/female pairings takes a simple notion of "what turns guys on" and adds it to further non-complex settings, dialogue and finales. As it is token for this series, the sex scenarios are unfiltered and not jazzed-up, but the opening credits, soundtrack and vignette intros are laced with angry-youth tempo and extremely cool photography. The dichotomy doesn't end here though, as we'll see later.

Sultry poses and tantalizing voice-overs, all filmed in a combination of color/halftone/b&w enhancements, make up Taylor St. Claire's introduction to the first sexual coupling. The setting is a living room, the center of action - a couch, the activity at hand - indulgence of solo pleasuring. With no segue, Taylor's masturbation is abruptly subject to a welcome interruption by a moderately tattooed man, apparently quite anxious to go "downtown". Aside from typical genuine, or otherwise, moans of ecstacy, there exists no mutual dialogue. Here, there is only one activity necessary - the filling of holes. It goes without saying, but of course these holes I speak of include the three primarily utilized orifices of the female anatomy; mouth, pussy, ass. So, with a brief tongue-lashing to further warm her up, Taylor returns the oral favor with an intense blowjob, embellished by a virtual waterfall of saliva. Hence... hole number one. Cubby hole numbers two and three are later prodded and poked via an assortment of positions which includes reverse-cowgirl and doggy. The finale, filmed over-the-guys-shoulder, keeps Taylor's open mouth and pierced tongue in clear view for the oncoming pop of man-juice. Now, there are two things, sexually speaking, that I found a bit irritating... and the pun is intended. Firstly, at no point through this scenario does the man achieve full-wood - almost, but never fully. The second is the obvious lack of lubrication. Maybe to some this is an unnoticeable factor. However, as I see it (and Taylor probably felt it), there's no such thing as too much lube! Otherwise, Taylor pulls off a fairly plausible sexual escapade.

The second and third chapters each utilize attractive women, Kristina and Lea, paired with veteran cocksmen Pat Myne and Dave Hardman. Again, the introductions present the girls in a series of tempting poses filmed with a music-video style. The sets, as is the case for all four chapters, are simple - living rooms and bedrooms. With regard to sexual heat factors, the thermometer is bursting. Yes... chapters two and three are scorching renditions of anal acrobatics and inner-mouth cum blasts.

I'm not quite sure how to describe chapter four without being crass, but I'll give it a shot. Divergence is most likely the proper choice of adjectives, in this case. Unlike the prior chapters where the ladies were very groomed and fairly shapely, the final vignette presents us with London, a brunette who possesses a pretty face, an average body and an extremely hairy bush. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but keeping continuous with the established concept, it is odd and I have no evidence to prove that this single chapter was included to grab fans of the "natural" look. Furthering the inconsistencies, London and her male counterpart (for fans of pro wrestling, this guy is a dead giveaway for Raven) perform a short and rather standard sex show comprised of no anal whatsoever. Again, not that it's a bad thing - it just doesn't mesh well with the established "norm" of this particular flick.

I, fitting snugly into the Gen-X age bracket, have an understanding and appreciation for Zane's motivations. Put a different way, for the most part I appreciate his vision. However, in the case of Cubby Holes #3, this ongoing dichotomy I spoke of relates to my interpretation of a slight hypocrisy. Zane's motivations extend to exposing an audience comprised of a younger - hipper demographic to porn. It just so happens that Gen-X'rs have indeed embraced the "chic" or "neo-porn" world - both males and females. This leads me to a noteworthy point for potential consumers - Cubby Holes #3 is targeted to the "single" or more blatant description "raincoater". I'll say it again, "not that it's necessarily a bad thing." Cubby Holes is a worthy production, even with it's faults. However, it's only fair to advise those interested, especially you X'rs, this is not really a "chick-friendly flick" and is solely designed to showcase a submissive female while barely displaying the males throughout. The overtly distinguishable theme is "Girls who want to be sluts". Not exactly what one might expect from a filmmaker who seeks to envelop a vastly growing audience expecting modern styling, kick-ass music and hot people engaging in hot sex - without being limited to a "person" being assailed by "mystery" dicks. Then again, porno allows it's creators some room to move. Zane's projects are popular with the above-mentioned crowd, no doubt. But Cubby Holes is purely intended to activate male viewers libidos who appreciate Zane's style and seek a film that embodies a sense of "it's me boning that chick" rather than a gender boundary crossover film intended to please both males and females.

Final thoughts - the "extras". Cubby Holes #3 gives viewers five interactive options. A motion chapter index, a good photo gallery, the option of "jumping" right to the cum shots, a web-site info page and believe it or not...phone-sex ads.
