Valley Of The Dolls

Every time I sit down to watch a lesbian erotica film, I'm expecting to be carried away to a magical wonderland of glorious sapphic bliss. Most often, the experience delivers without any problem, and I'm completely swept into their world of perfect love. A lesbian porno needn't do much to keep me enthralled (I previously was satisfied watching those 90's-era 6-hour reused junk footage compilations, in which the girls can be plainly seen to hate having to eat pussy) but there are certain things that can completely ruin the experience. Professionalism in the business is easily recognized in the product, and in this case, the studio failed to give the movie any post-production sound edits. The result is that the director/ cameraman's voice is heard repeatedly in every scene (telling the girls what to do) causing the magical joy of love on screen to be horribly interrupted by a man's voice. There is also the element of handheld camera work (with lots of moving around) and these together create a kind of documentary/ impromptu performance feel to the film. When a girl is about to go down on the other girl, the camera will suddenly swing up and over them, and the director says something like "spread your legs", giving the action to come a sort of sleazy voyeur tone. The audience's presence has been evoked into the moment, vicariously through the director's presence, who is himself, a sleazy voyeur. Nothing good in this film isn't ruined by the sudden imposition of the bastard's voice, and the experience of watching it becomes a nerve-wracking expectation of having to hear him again just when you're getting back into it. I'm of the opinion that this film is a tragic loss, due primarily to the studio having had an auteur behind the camera, rather than a professional. The end product is something that only he himself could sit down and truly enjoy. Perhaps I'm asking too much from this studio when I ask for a "lesbian erotica film", as it would seem that just "girls having blissful sex with one another" wasn't enough for their premiere director, as his personal involvement in the project was clearly more important than the product itself - very reminiscent of a home movie.
