An Erotic Resurrection in THE 8TH DAY

By Diesel
After several weeks of letting THE 8TH DAY languish in the corner of my desk, I finally got around to opening up this elegantly designed and impressively packaged four-disc disc set. I thought at the very least, it would be a nice change of pace from all the generic gonzo titles just begging to earn the coveted "average" grade from this cranky, embittered Empire Reviewer. In the end, this movie blew me away with its ambition and quality. It doesn't replace TORI BLACK IS PRETTY FILTHY as my favorite title for 2009, but it does rank as one of the best adult movies I've ever seen.

While some studios are still committed to producing adult features, most of them are hacked out so indiscriminately, that they aren't that much better than the movies cranked out in the videotape heyday of the eighties and nineties. It's been disappointing to find that even with high definition video, CGI special effects, and performers who can act as well as screw on camera, most titles simply lack vision and creativity. As a result, we get a lot of tired old satires, uninspired parodies, cliched vampire tales, sensationalistic murder mysteries, and overwrought love triangles - all of which are about as predictable as a television sitcom.

For whatever reason, porn and science fiction/fantasy have done pretty well with each other. The combination of dystopia and carnal sin can be an ideal, if overdone, setting for some compelling storytelling, and novel sex scenes. (Brad Armstrong's 2040 and Michael Ninn's LATEX series come to mind as superior examples.) A couple of years ago, director Ren Savant delivered the simply terrific UPLOAD, a critically acclaimed feature which was justifiably given the royal treatment on DVD. And now, he's done it again with THE 8TH DAY which has already won several major industry awards, and is destined to go down as a classic.

Kayden Kross plays Samantha, a daughter of a scientist who is put to by her father so she can survive the up and coming apocalypse (shades of Superman's origin). Shots of Samantha interacting with her daddy (played by the director himself) can feel a bit awkward, since Miss Kross is naked throughout while he's fully dressed in shirt, tie and white labcoat. Luckily, nothing distasteful occurs. Once in the future, Kayden finds herself assisted by a "scrappy scavenger girl" played with finesse by Amber Rayne, and eventually meets up with the local ruler, formerly known as Prince. Eventually, a few plot and character twists are revealed, and our protagonist must learn to deal with a new conflict and a final fate. Oh yeah, we see a lot of fucking and sucking along the way, which of course brings the story dead in its tracks so that viewers can take the opportunity to fap away. It's something we've all gotten used to when it comes of adult features.

Of course, THE 8TH DAY isn't perfect. It can't certainly compete on a literary or cinematic basis with mainstream movies. (Of course, porn was never meant to be as illuminating as HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR.) There are many moments where the acting is strained, and where seams and flaws in the production show up unavoidably. The human drama and plot hold our interest, but only on a superficial level. (It's not as if Phillip K. Dick or even Harlan Ellison wrote the screenplay.) Also, certain hardcore set-ups didn't work for me. For instance, a scene where Tori Black, Bree Olson and Poppy Morgan act like crazed wildcats (called "Gila Girls") struck me as bit silly, not to mention strident and screechy due to their gurgling screams which make their orgasms sound more crazed than arousing. But their lesbian action is wacky and wild, even when the girls seem to be on the verge of cracking up over the absurdity of their characters. Just make sure you turn lower the volume of your TV or receiver while viewing this threesome, or your neighbors will call the SPCA on you.

The post-apocalyptic approach seems to be influenced by the MAD MAX films, with a bit of RESIDENT EVIL thrown in. Set designs have a James Cameron-influence, and the make-up work can almost pass today's mainstream standards. I appreciate the fact that we get enough door scenes to escape the congestion and artificiality of studio-bound settings. Dominatrix Kylie Ireland (whom I have not seen in years, and is now thicker and more tattooed that I can recall) does Derrick Pierce and Jandi Lynn in a run-down alley outside of an abandoned building, and a romp between Krissy Leigh and Tyler Knight takes place in an old shack.

Lead performer Kayden Kross is damn good in her role. Her acting is often better than what is seen in most adult dramas, and she's able to convey emotion without chewing up every scene or resorting to high school dramatics (for the most part, at least). Miss Kross looks fantastic from the moment she emerges from her cryogenic chamber, and starts this party with a bang when she takes on three guys within the first ten minutes. Her deep, lustful blowjobs are as visually appealing as her perfect body. Her finale with Evan Stone and Violet Marcel is not the wildest threesome I've ever seen, but it works like a charm due to their natural chemistry. (Kudos to the director for leaving the natural sounds of sex intact, without music overdubs or any other sound effects.)

Visually, THE 8TH DAY looks great on DVD (and even better on Blu-ray). The videography itself is clean and crisp, and demo worthy for your next porn party. I also appreciated the studio spreading out this nearly four and a half hour main feature over two discs to maximize picture quality, even though one has to incur some needless exercise by walking over to their player to change discs. (Kindly recall that several years ago, laserdiscs owners often had to flip sides and switch platters of their prized movies every hour or thirty minutes.) As for the audio, I have no complaints: dialogue is clear and well-mixed, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound effects are well-placed without sounding too gimmicky.

Two extra DVDs are part of the package, providing a wealth of bonus features other than what's available on the main feature. Audio commentaries from the director and the lead performers are available throughout the movie, and disc one itself contains a couple of Easter Eggs (just hunt around the main menu and your cursor will spot them) which feature extra candid footage of gorgeous Ms. Kross. Discs three and four contain everything from extended hardcore footage, interviews, bloopers, promotional videos, and featurettes on sound, make-up, and other production elements.

What else can I say about a DVD title which surpasses every elevated expectation one might have of an epic adult feature? THE 8TH DAY sets new standards for superior adult entertainment.

(Kindly recall that several years ago, laserdiscs owners often had to flip sides and switch platters of their prized movies every hour or thirty minutes.) This is also the first porn Blu-ray I've seen to have a lossless DTS soundtrack, and it sounds terrific. It's questionable whether one can really hear a significant difference between a lossless soundtrack, and plain vanilla Dolby Digital or DTS, but in any case, dialogue is clear and well-mixed, and surround sound effects are well-placed without sounding too gimmicky.

Two extra DVDs (and I mean DVDs, not Blu-rays) are part of the package, providing a wealth of bonus features other than what's available on the main feature. While it's disappointing that the special features weren't upgraded for high definition, I appreciate their inclusion in this package (certain blockbuster Blu-ray titles like OPERATION DESERT STORMY from Wicked were disappointingly bare-boned). Naturally, the picture and audio quality of standard DVD isn't as impressive as what's presented on Blu-ray, but the what we get is certainly up to industry standards.

What else can I say about a Blu-ray title which surpasses every elevated expectation one might have of an epic adult feature? THE 8TH DAY sets new standards for superior adult entertainment.
