Poor Upgrade of a Historically Important Adult Film...

By Spooky
Of all the older adult titles that deserve a Blu-ray release, Zazel has to rank pretty night on the list. A 1996 release that brought home seven AVN Awards (including Best All Sex Film and Top Selling Release of the Year), it's widely considered as Director Philip Mond's crowning achievement in porn.

But after more than a decade, does Zazel still hold up as great erotica? The answer is sadly, no. By today's standards, Zazel still is visually impressive, but the sex is rather tame. Even the anal finale involving a diabolical Anna Romero and males Drew Reese and Kevin James seems rather average now - even though it was considered edgy and sizzling at the time of Zazel's release.

For those not familiar with the movie, Zazel is essentially a film with a number of different vignettes, each revolving around the fact that the main character, played by 1994 Penthouse Pet of the Year Sasha Vinni, is attempting to create a new perfume with a unique, alluring scent. Sasha is present in most of the movie's sex scenes, although she's a girl-only performer, so sometimes she just watches and/or masturbates while others are having sex.

As noted above, since the sex is no longer quite on par with what porn fans have come to expect in their releases, the main reason to pick Zazel up on Blu-ray is for collector's purposes - in other words, to have a great-looking copy of a notable porn movie. The problem here is that the transfer just isn't all that great-looking.

Zazel was shot on film, and the master print has always suffered from dirt and defects of poor film stock. However, while those defects are still in the print, even the overall quality of the picture itself doesn't look much better on Blu-ray than it does on DVD. The biggest advantage is a 1.78:1 picture that fills up one's widescreen TV, but as far as picture quality is concerned, there's no "pop" to what viewers will see on this Blu-ray. The transfer is in 1080i, although one assumes since Zazel was shot on film, and not video, that a full 1080p transfer would have been possible. Audio is just as bad, with a 2.0 Dolby track that sounds muted and muffled.

Extras on the movie disc consist of three trailers (all in HD) for Babes Illustrated 17, Runaway Love and Taboo 23. Not a lot, but they do serve as a nice comparison for what the main feature lacks in sharpness and clarity. Metro/Cal Vista have also included a second bonus disc with additional features, but that disc is a standard DVD, not a Blu-ray. This disc includes a pair of bonus scenes from other Metro releases (one with Kirsten Price, the other with Charlotte Stokely); a 14 ½-minute sex scene with Gina LaMarca and another guy; a slide show; lots of trailers; and a 90-second preview of the upcoming Zazel 2.

As a piece of porn history, Zazel is worth owning, but I can't justify picking up the Blu-ray version because the quality is lacking. Better off that interested viewers pick up this release on DVD, which comes with the same supplements you'll find on this release (one assumes Disc 2 of both sets is exactly the same) and costs half as much.

Worst BluRay Transfer

By PornFan31
Very distracting to the film itself is the BluRay transfer is an upscale of SD content with an incorrect aspect ratio. Shot on standard definition video, this looks *very* bad at 1080i stretched to 16x9.

Synopsis:

A breakthrough film in several ways, Zazel focuses almost as much on sensual imagery as it does on sexual heat. The film is ostensibly about the search for the perfect perfume; Zazel (Vinni) a world-famous artist is assigned to create the most arousing scent ever. Her creative mind enters its deepest and most erotic fantasies, participating in encounters ranging from angelic to the demonic in settings whose beauty rivals that of the performers, including several Penthouse Pets. No feeling too deep. No scent too strong. No limit to any experience will keep Zazel from victory in her creative quest for the perfection of her design... The Scent of Love.
