Interns, The

Can I say that I'm really quite amused that my boxcover says right on it "Display in All-Girl Section," as though the video store is the primary audience. And not that they shouldn't be, but what amuses me is that my own video collection has an all-girl section.

A bit of irritation, by the way: as much as I love the Free Speech Coalition bit at the beginning about piracy - I really do support the cause - my inability to skip it on this disc is really aggravating. I don't pirate porn, I yell at people who do, and this clip is at the beginning of the majority of the films I review. Please, just give me the option to flip through it.

Some pretty slick production here from New Sensations in their Sappho Series. Riding on the success that Girlfriends Films and Sweetheart Video have experienced with their all-girl titles, some major studios are finally picking up on the quality, especially in the lack of toys and genuine passion that they show. So now there is this series with New Sensations and Elegant Angel releasing Club 59, etc. It's a nice move and shows that the industry is not out of ideas, but rather can reinvent itself when there is something successful out there.

A bit of a complaint about The Interns, though: they make it quite tough on me to figure out who is who by titling each scene rather than telling me who is in it. And I'm not always that great at identifying stars outside of the dozen or so that are my favourites. I do like the beginning scene, though where there is the fake spilling accident to get some clothes off. They don't really even bother with the rest of the premise as they just jump straight to making out. I'm betting this wasn't exactly what they intended, but damn is this scene hot. Quite the scene here, probably nearly a half hour's worth.

Zoe Voss is in this scene with her short hair as well, who perhaps you should look up in Naughty Newbies in a boy-girl scene. Not sure how new that is, but wow: I would pay to work for her rather than having a studio pay me. Tasty. Julia Ann is playing the boss, too, in that kind of evil way that Glenn Close figured out so well in many of her latter roles.

Charlie Laine is pissed off that she's not being photographed as much as Sara Stone is, but she manages to work her way back into the shoot by making out with Sara for photographer Michelle Lay. They move over to the couch area and wind up with a really nice three-way scene. Very thorough with this one as well.

This was probably the point, though, where I started to get more than a bit weirded out by the overall sense of the piece. I mean, that it had to be working women in fashion that provided the plot. Maybe in the future we can get a bit further away from the stereotype, though I wonder if the idea was to come up with something where having nothing but women would not seem out of place.

A scene later on, with Allie Haze and Zoe Britton, probably brought the most heat from my perspective. Not really sure why, but Zoe has such great presence in her scenes. The focus is just slightly softer in this scene, too, and it's well-lit at the same time. I don't really know how to describe everything they did right, but they did a whole lot right here.

Brilliant music throughout, too, though the end credit music is rather hard to listen to. Reminds me of how awful the music was for the opening credits of The L Word. I mean, they had such a cool opening in the first season, then ruined it with whatever that song was. Blah. And if that's the most I can find to complain about with The Intern? All-girl fans, you should be lining up to buy this one. Hopefully it's a continuing trend for many of these great all-girl stars for them to get the recognition they deserve.
