Hustle, No Flow

By Oranje
Parodies have been a solid part of the adult scene for more than a decade now. Of course, they go back much further than that, but it was around 2003 or so that everything in pop culture was pornified in some way. The problem is that, by now, easily identifiable elements have all been used up. And considering how fragmented mass media is, it's harder to build a parody audience for a given piece of content. Or, in plainer language, and despite my love for Amy Adams, I've never seen American Hustle. I won't get the references. Instead, I get vintage porn. Ugh. 70s stereotypes are almost as bad as 70s porn.

So rather than to attempt to explain that to you, I'm just going to select Aaliyah Love and Penny Pax, the two I wanted to see here anyhow, and recap their scenes. Each has two. Aaliyah starts off with Tommy Gunn, dressed like he's doing a detective show from 1974. Ugh. I could do without that part. It's fairly vanilla stuff, though shot reasonably well. The lights are good. The dialog gets into old television tropes. That could go, too, though I'm betting everything I'd like to see go would mean, you know, just a good film. Not a parody. This scene just keeps going with Tommy licking away. For quite a bit, actually. To the point where I'm getting bored. Also, this is a solid reminder of why that slurping/breathing sound in porn needs to be toned down a bit. Way too much of that here. And then we get a flashback, complete with terrible voiceover. Which introduces the very lovely Penny Pax into the mix. I like Penny a great deal. Though I wish Tommy could stop dressing like a 70s caricature. I'm pretty sure they also just did an outdoor shot from Seinfeld. Then Penny tries to act. Nothing personal, Penny, but those line deliveries weren't all that great. Too much of an attempt to act here. This is getting increasingly painful, where they only seem to be furthering dialog rather than doing anything remotely fun. Make it stop. Please make it stop. Penny does a really long blowjob scene at one point. Not a great scene, but a decent mouth shot in the end. And Penny does have nice eyes. From here I just started flipping from scene to scene, hitting the chapter button and stopping when there was something I liked. The problem is, I got all the way to the credits without really stopping.

And that's the problem with major parody films. One, they aren't going to be individual tours de for the subject matter, as neither the natural acting ability nor the technical elements are going to be present to make that work. On top of that, considering the small market size for such a film, is this going to be some kind of sexualized cult classic or something? I just don't get on what level parodies like this work. At the end of the day, I think there are better choices out there. Either enjoy award-winning mass releases, or enjoy good porn. But when you try to mix the two like this, both get remarkably compromised, and that's ultimately a shame. It's not anyone's fault who was involved in the production. It's really just a flawed concept. Maybe it's time to
let the parodies die.
