Timing is everything. As is the case of "Blue Movie." Jenna Jameson was perched on the edge of super-stardom, Michael Zen was hitting his stride, and Wicked Pictures was there to make sure we witnessed the results. Now Digital Playground brings the marriage to the binary world in crisp, digital perfection. A landmark for Zen, "Blue Movie," (a play on Picaso's "Blue Period") delivers intriguing cinematography, adult superstars, and even a dash of humor.

Zen has a way of twisting erotica on film to warp the way the viewer to his vision. He continuously pushes the envelope of adult filmmaking, raising the standard by which all adult films are judged. Zen extracts every ounce of sexuality the scenes have to offer, drawing you into his world. Jameson's infamous blue ball masturbation scene is a perfect example of Zen's sexual perception. How do you make an ordinary blue rubber ball erotic? Just watch and see. Jameson rolls the ball seductively over her tight snatch as she squeals with pleasure. It seems as though the mere touch of the ball sets her ablaze. But it's the way Zen synthesizes these bizarre scenes with good old-fashioned sex that sets him apart. Balance is the key.

Keeping a balance between sex and dialogue is probably the hardest aspect of feature production. Saturate the film with sex and the plot is not able to develop, not enough and the flick becomes boring?real fast. "Blue Movie," sets an even pace, providing shorter vignettes with more frequency. Altogether nine escapades appear. Not every scene climaxes with a cumshot, and I applaud this method. Sometimes it's nice to get a glimpse here, or some fluffing there. Not to take from the money shot, out of seven possible cumshots four ended with a gooey coating?one scene even had three! More importantly, the orgasm-less scenes didn't leave me hanging. Instead, they pumped me up for the big scenes. Think of it as a tease.

The sex itself was invigorating and fresh, every scene pushing the film forward. Of mention is TT Boy's aforementioned triple cumshot. TT Boy plays an actor playing a treasure hunter searching for the "Golden Oyster." Aphrodisiacs strong enough to permanently increase male virility. Testing his newfound hardness on Jameson, he fucks her in every position imaginable shooting first on her twat, next from the doggie-style position on her ass, and finally across her exhausted face. It appears as though Digital Playground decided to let the film stand on its own volition, omitting most special features except trailers and a photo/slide show. There were, however, a few choice bloopers attached to the credits at the end. The audio mix wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. The dialogue was clear, if a touch boomy, and the mix between dialogue and soundtrack fairly even. The camera work, however, was first rate. Seamless editing made viewing an uninterrupted pleasure. Overall, another solid outing from Zen and Co.

Steven St. Croix should have won an award for his part as the cross dressing director. His performance is so campy it was actually fun to watch the whole film without fast forwarding. The sex is hot and I really enjoyed the girl on girl action. The "blue ball" scene was very different and I am not sure if I liked it or not. Michael Zen however, does get points for coming up with the idea. The other sex scenes are solid and well filmed. I have to say that this is defiantly different from most adult movies and Michael Zen gets credit for coming up with something new and different.

This film to DVD transfer is good and has been digitally re-mastered. I saw no problems with the picture quality, but then again I was way into watching the movie.

The sound was fine and I was unaware of any problems.

I found the supplements a little lacking. You do get a chapter index, behind the scenes photos, and slide show.
Conclusion
This was a fun film to watch with sold sex scenes and a good dose of humor. This film was originally produced in 1995 and has won several AVN Awards including best film and best couple sex scene. The film is a nice one to watch with your partner.

If you want to see a really good Jenna Flick, I recommend Conquest. There weren't enough scences with Jenna which I found to be disappointing. The quality of the film as usual with Micheal Zen are incredible as he uses actual film. However, the sound quality and music were not very good and the plot was strange but different. If the music didn't always block out the moans and the screams, I think the movie would have been much better. The other sex scences were pretty good but I still think that its disappointing that Jenna only did one guy in the whole movie.

DVD Features:
Above average because of the two excellent trailers, high quality pictures and most importantly, the slide show feature.

Even though my video review of this award winning movie was less than glowing, I figured it has to at least look better on DVD. Of course, my problems with 'Blue Movie' had little to do with the picture and sound, but with the complete lack of sexual heat and the tragic misuse of one Jeanna Fine. While the new format, certainly can't fix these shortcomings, at least it will look cool.

OK, so I'm about three years late on this one, but it did win an award for Best Film in 1996, and you guys are always on me to review more Jenna movies. I figure this is a good way for me to make you happy and cover my ass on some older, 'classic' titles at the same time. Besides, it has Jeanna Fine, Rebecca Lord and Lana Sands in it. Wow, that isn't much of an open for a movie that won all these awards. I must be getting lazy with all the gonzo and oral tapes I've been doing. Well, this movie was part of that first year Jenna hype and she looks fantastic on the cover of this box. Since it won best film, I can only guess that there is some sort of a plot here, which is another good reason to have hired Jeanna Fine.

We open with Stephen St. Croix being examined by a shrink, Rebecca Lord. He is a porn director who likes to cross dress. He says it helps him get in touch with women's sexuality. Psycho babble aside, she thinks it's a good idea for him to get in touch with women's sexuality by licking her pussy. It's a rare thing to just see a guy go down on a girl in porn, but that is all we get here. A short, though rather hot pussy lapping session. Me thinks we are in for a strange ride.

This is followed up by a very strange scene with Jenna masturbating. (You know, this scene actually does have some heat, and that freaky blue ball is a lot brighter on DVD.) It looks good, but who knows what it means. When she wakes up from this dream, Jenna gets a screaming call from the editor of some sleaze rag who has her out to get the scoop on St. Croix. Jenna seems less than thrilled with the idea of meddling in the private life of this man, but off she goes. It's pretty clear the doe eyed Jenna is just a fan of the reclusive director, but still she goes searching for the dirt. She runs into a problem, Jeanna Fine. There is some really great dialog here between Fine, the editor, St. Croix and even Jenna. Thanks to some fast talking, Jeanna is allowed to stay on the set of his new film and this is where things really take off.

Jenna is ushered to the make up room where she is hurried into costume. As she changes, the starlet next to her, Tera Heart, relates the story of her first experience with the famous director. It was on a set that required her to play a beach bunny on a snowy mountain. Again, some funny dialog ensues as Alex Sanders joins her on the slope for some fun in the snow. Tera looks hot and shows that she is a first rate hose hound, drooling all over Alex's rod and practically begging to get it into her steamy slit. She is wonderfully flexible, pulling her shapely legs way back to her shoulders to get rammed full of rod. As usual, Tera really lights up with a dick in her ass, pounding her body back to meet Alex as he fucks her from behind and taking a big load in her mouth, proving she is a welcome addition to any film for her raw slutty, sexuality.

When Tony Tedeschi shows up on set, he needs a little fluffing. Since Tera is a star, make up girl, Dallas takes over. With Jenna watching, the blonde shows how well she can suck a cock hard in no time. No complete scene here, just some more dialog to get us to roll time. With the cameras rolling, Tedeschi gets into his scene with a bar whore, Lana Sands. The story within the story is pretty interesting and well written, as is the main script. Fine acting here by all the players and definite props to the script writer. Jenna finally gets into the action by spreading her thighs for TT Boy. (Within the context of the movie within the movie.) She certainly is loud enough to be a porn star and her pussy looks tasty. Even more fun to watch is how Jenna stares down his cock while devouring it, as if she has some personal grudge against it that can only be solved by draining it of all fluid. TT is known for his high energy fucks, but Jenna does all the fucking her, riding his cock as hard as she can. After one shot, he stays hard and bends her over to finish the job. This time, Jenna gets fucked nice and hard from behind until her pussy gets a second coat of cum. He's still not done and pushes her thighs back for a quick slam fest before unloading a single shot into her mouth. Pretty damn hot scene, especially for a feature. (There is a reason behind this scene, the three pop shots, etc. but you have to be watching the actual video to be following the film plot.)

When next we see Jenna, she has been captured by Amazons and is in the middle of a Lana Sands/Jeanna Fine sandwich. It's lesbian sex, but Jeanna really knows what she's doing and Jenna does make a lovely center piece. Still, this falls back into the more typically feature style of sex. If not for Jeanna's filthy mouth this scene would be rather dull indeed.

Elsewhere, Tedeschi has also been captured and is being sexually assaulted by Dallas. (Wasn't she supposed to be the make up girl?) Tony seems a little bored here, and Dallas is trying harder to keep her huge fruit hat on her head than to fuck. Nice mish with her legs in the air. This scene really is more important to the plot than to the sexual energy of the film. You see, when Tony can't pop in time, St. Croix steps in. After a bit of macho posturing, a bet is made.

The director has to deliver the stunt pop with any woman Tony picks. He chooses Jeanna which sets up a touching moment between the two sexually dubious characters. What it really sets up is a chance for us to watch one of porn's greatest fucks, Jeanna Fine, in action. Of course, what we get is about five minutes of pussy eating, followed by three of missionary sex and a shot all over her belly. Not even a glimpse of the best cocksucker of our time with her lips around a dick. Bad form, even if you're Michael Zen.

As a script, I can't begin to praise "Blue Movie" enough. It is involved, strange and funny, perhaps one of the best I have ever seen. However, this isn't a film festival, it's porn and without great sex, the best scripts still leave the audience limp. With the exception of a very hot Tera Heart scene and a moderately interesting Jenna pairing with TT Boy, this movie has pretty much zero sexual heat. No matter how well shot the scenes are, they just don't have the spark it takes for me to really like it. Even Jeanna Fine is sexually here, though her non-sex performance is spectacular. So, though technically tight, well written and wonderfully acted, "Blue Movie" is just too much movie and not enough blue for my tastes.

Watching this on DVD, I have the same feelings I had on video. Zen gets great non-sex performances from his cast, he has a nice script, but the sex is just lacking. Jenna has some bright moments and Tera Heart is a super slut, but to have Jeanna Fine and not use her is just criminal. Too much script and not enough good sex, even the second time around.

With "Blue Movie," Wicked Film and Digital Playground deliver a long awaited moment in the adult DVD marketplace: QUALITY.

With eleven titles now in my collection - only "Blue Movie" delivers the promise of broadcast video quality.

My other ten adult DVD's (major titles, with major stars, from major companies) are vastly inferior to "Blue Movie," seemingly bent on keeping low-end PC compatibility at the forefront of their thinking when prepping (compressing) those titles for DVD. Sub-sub-VHS quality, with what looks like 30-50:1 compression (rampant, constant, annoying artifacting on EVERY frame), is the norm for all the adult DVD titles in my collection - but not "Blue Movie."

From the opening scenes, "Blue Movie" LOOKS like a MOVIE! Shot on rich, luxuriant film, it loses the harshness, if not "amateur" look of common video-produced adult fare.

A professional, broadcast-quality, and for once, BETTER than VHS looking DVD is merely the sterling wrapping to a story that mixes the common "movie within a movie" theme with apparent nods to the mainstream.

I noted similarities in imagery, particularly with "Heavy Metal" (remember the blue sphere?) and even "Repo Man" (remember the zapped motorcycle cop's smoking boots?).

But "Blue Movie" is NOT the mainstream. It's adult entertainment, and the incredible Jenna Jameson and Jeanna Fine (and the rest!) will simply leave you in rapt appreciation - this is how it's supposed to be done, boys and girls.

And girls with girls, for that matter...

Special features are a bit slim - the standard set of trailers, and a small sequence of behind the scene photos, plus a few live action outtakes at the close of the film, are about it -- but this is completely irrelevant to the fact that "Blue Movie" delivers on every important front - great sex at every turn, artfully photographed, with enough story to tie things together - and most pointedly - presented as to preserve the notion that this was a film with a BUDGET, unlike the bulk of modern adult fare.

Hats off to Michael Zen for this veritable masterpiece of adult film-making. I would suggest that he author a manual for his brethren in the adult industry: "Zen and the Art of Adult DVD's."

"Blue Movie" is an absolute must have in any adult DVD collection. It's an example of what we should EXPECT from the medium, but proves a rarefied island in a sea of the commonplace.

Michael Zen has a very unique style of film making. His films offer a surreal, weird, and intriguing atmosphere. Blue Movie is a perfect example of the mastery of Michael Zen.

If you think about it, the story is very basic and simple. When Michael Zen adds all his plot twists and turns the film keeps you guessing, wondering, and interested.

This film includes many weird, uncommon aspects:
First, in Jenna's opening scene she masturbates with a blue beach ball. Now this does not sound like a common practice in a porno, but Jenna is brilliant the way she caresses and rubs her wet pussy all over the ball. After seeing this scene I wish I was a ball in Jenna's house.

Second, Steven St. Croix plays a Hollywood director who is trying to experience what it is like to be a woman. Not only do you get to see him in drag, but there is a scene where he wears one of those fruit hats. I about pissed my pants. You have to see it.

Third, during the movie we are on the set of Steven's latest movie he is directing. The weird thing is that you are constantly jumping in and out of his movie. I even became engrossed in the story line of the movie he was making. But not once did I get confused.

Jenna and Steven both display very strong acting skills. Jenna's three sex scenes are all incredible. It always looks like she enjoys every second of the sex and I know the guys and girls are doing like-wise. I just love how she looks and acts so innocent until the sex starts. We are all lucky that she choose to make pornos instead of commercials or something.

As usual Digital Playground did an superb job on this DVD. The audio and video is top notch. There are also many extra feature including a great photo gallery. Michael Zen and Jenna are a deadly combination...
