Face Dance Part I & II
We can't say much about Face Dance, Parts I & II that wasn't said in our February, 1993 reviews of the videotapes... except that in the intervening years, this filmed production hasn't lost one iota of its artistry or its heat.
Recall those early days when porn was finally starting to come into its own; when acclaimed performers like Rocco Siffredi, Tyffany (when she was still "Tiffany")Million, Tiffany Mynx, Rebecca Bardoux, Brittany O'Connell and Sierra were still fairly new; and when one could still see much-missed supporting players like Francesca Le and Cody O'Conor.
And if that's not enough, this was also Tina Tyler's premiere American performance.
But aside from terrific sex and decent non-sex acting, these discs offer, besides the usual chapter buttons, what has become an Evil Angel staple: the Fetish Menu. Among the sex acts that can now be immediately accessed are rimming, tit-fucking, A2M, d.p., gaping assholes, and just about anything else a viewer might be looking for his/her sexual enjoyment. There's also something labeled "specialty chapter," which takes the viewer directly to tease performances, anal fingering, anal plug use, and in Part I, a butt contest. Included as well are an autobiography of John "Buttman" Stagliano, a bio of Rocco, and a chance to look over Stagliano's shoulder (literally) as he watches parts of the film comments on what's on-screen.
On the down side, too many of the photos in the photo gallery are out of focus, and the interface too easily returns the viewer to the main menu, a restart of the gallery from its beginning. The menu also contains an entry for "star biographies," but they apparently don't exist on either disc and can't be accessed.
The Stagliano film commentaries themselves are more than enough reason to buy these discs, but you can grab them for all of the reasons mentioned above.
Great film, mediocre DVD
This Buttman feature, filmed in late 1992 won five
AVN awards, including best film. AVN's film guide has
referred to Face Dance as "the mother of all fuck flicks."
Does it still hold up today, over seven years later?
Yes, it does! The blindfolded ass contest that
evolves into an orgy is probably the best scene in
the movie, but there are a number of great scenes.
After seeing this, you realize how formulaic and boring
most porn films have become, especially Gonzo videos.
Unfortunately, although this movie is unequaled in terms
of content, the DVD is only mediocre. The bit rate is not
high enough, leading to grainy, pixelated video. Moreover,
the color seems to have been washed out of the film. It is
critically important that a film like this be shown in bright,
lurid colors. I've never seen an Evil Angel DVD that had
even adequate video quality. Someone needs to take John
Stagliano aside and explain to him that the whole point of
DVD is to have better picture quality than you get on
a videotape. Use two sides, use DVD 9, do whatever you need
to do, but stop putting out inferior quality DVDs!
The extras are pretty good. There's not a feature length
commentary, but there is a fairly lengthy section showing
John sitting in his editing bay commenting on the movie as
he plays it on his monitor. If only the picture
quality of the movie was as good as that of the commentary
section, this disk would be a must own. As it is, you should get
this film on video, if you can find it in that format.
A superb film in the best video format
FACEDANCE Parts 1 and 2 are classic Award-Winning Videos from director John Stagliano, and benefit wonderfully in the DVD format. Featuring beautiful women, and shot-on-film photography , the DVD allows easy access to the stunning sex scenes scenes. Simply put, this video and its second-parter is worth ten times any other random video features you might find out there. These are film classics and worth the retail price.
