Michael Ninn returns with Shock, his follow up to his critically successful and incredibly popular film Latex. As I noted in my review for Latex, every few years the adult industry produces a feature, which has a more mainstream appeal. Michael Ninn was the director of the highly acclaimed Sex and its sequel, Sex 2, and helped carve out a niche in today's marketplace, a more cinematic erotic work which tries to break away from the stereotypical style of a lot of adult features are known for.

Latex and Shock are cutting edge cyberpunk inspired erotica with high quality visual effects and strong direction. Michael Ninn's style of directing is much more centered within the Hollywood fashion than the adult film worlds, and although his films feature real hardcore action, they are not hindered by it, or allow it to take away from the overall feature.

Michael Ninn directs a truly stellar cast of actors and actresses. The cast is helmed by Jon Dough returning in the role as Malcolm Stevens a mentally disturbed individual incarcerated in Noble Asylum. Much like in the film Latex, Malcolm's disturbed and truly bizarre sexual mind is the crux for the film, draws in all the characters in the film and sets up a strange series of sexual encounters.

Returning to the elements which pleased fans of Latex, Shock outdoes the previous film in every aspect. By making the story tighter and the visual effects stronger, there are no complaints that can be made about this movie. The cast of this film includes Jeanna Fine, Tricia Yen, Marine Cartier, Caressa Savage, Jill Kelly, Jenny Blair, Misty Rain, Felecia, Kia, Ona Zee, Rebecca Lord, Vince Voyeur, T.T. Boy, Peter North, John Decker and Sean Rider. Tyffany Million and Sunset Thomas also return in the sequel adding some familiar faces to this phenomenal cast.

This film features some more bizarre sequences and strange settings. Director Michael Ninn adds new elements to his visual storytelling style and makes this film even stranger than the first. In the opening sequence, Jeanna Fine is all dressed up. She is wearing a white makeup all over her body as well as a Marilyn Monroe wig, stockings and long black gloves. She takes out a large hot pink dildo which looks bizarre against her painted body and begins masturbating. Jon Dough, who proceeds to bounce her around in various positions, soon joins her. He finally gets her into position for some outstanding anal action and Jeanna delivers one of her best performances ever. VCA Pictures DVD department did a nice job in transferring this to DVD and the overall quality is top-notch. The video quality is outstanding and the film transfer is one the best for an adult title. Due to the length of the feature, no additional supplementary material is included.

Overall, Shock is a phenomenal sequel to an outstanding film, and a must own title for fans of Sci-Fi and Cyberpunk as well as anyone looking for something a little unique and different than their normal adult feature.

Shock is far and away the best porn film ever made, effectively combining a science fiction film noir storyline with a fetish-influenced set and costume design, and beautiful women who are totally into sex. It rates a "5" on every count: the plot is good, the acting is good, the techno music is good, and most of all, the sex is hot. Ninn has an exceptional way of placing you in that fantasy world you're in when you're having really great sex, which includes, couples, three ways, lesbian orgies, and lots of anal. This is not only a function of the many great looking actresses he uses and the heat he gets from them but, more crucially, from great editing. The shots are hand held and have a very clear, crisp focus. And the film speed is slightly faster than real time. This guy can direct. There are ten scenes, and they are all rather developed, with lots of parts and many actresses.

The plot is about a guy named Malcolm Stevens (Jon Dough) who is laid out on an operating table while Dr. Hellstrom (Ona Zee) and Dr. Mangrove (Tiffany Million) try to take control of his mind. He is hooked up to a TV set, and Mangrove eventually enters into his mind via the TV hookup. But Stevens manages to take control, and by the end of the film, he is free, and she is fried, being given an anti-psychotic as a TV screen registering her mind shows only snow and then goes black.

Some of sets look like Blade Runner (except here we see the red light district) and there's a fat Buddha guy that could have appeared in a Star Wars film. It's also kind of Orwellian. But the plot is more optimistic than those of Blade Runner or 1984. Here the guy is in control. So it's a reassuring fantasy about male control over technology as a means of control over women and female sexuality.

The first scene is a total scorcher and the standout of the film. Jeanna Fine delivers her best performance ever in stockings, pumps, black long gloves, and a Marilyn Monroe wig. She is shot wearing white makeup all over her. She begins by masturbating with a hot pink dildo and then gives head to John Dough. She gets in the missionary position, looking and talking into the camera, then reverse cowgirl, and then in her ass. Then we get a long masturbation scene, really two scenes, with two women (one of Ninn's main interests.) The fat Buddha guy looks on while the girls go at it. Tricia Yen showers herself and finishes herself off in a hot tub. Lots of close-ups and lots of wet sex.

These are all warm-ups for the centerpiece of the film, a scene in a nightclub where Jon Dough is now the emcee. It begins with Jeanna Fine wearing her wig, and undressing, again with the fan behind her, and then moves into a scene with four women dressed like Madonna in her MTV Video awards "Vogue" performance where she dressed as Marie Antoinette (even the music sounds like "Vogue"). This becomes a three way with a cross-dressed couple Sharon Kane and Sean Rider and Fine, and you can see Fine's puckered asshole as she sits watching the couple. She masturbates as the girl sucks on the other end of the dildo while she gets fucked form behind. Then we're back to the hot tubs and a three way with the Asian chick (Tricia Yen). This warm up scene is followed by a stand out lesbian scene where four girls in fetish get up fuck a blonde. The "pony girls" (Juli Ashton, Jill Kelley, Misty Rain, and Felicia) wear bits and little saddles. Very Helmut Newton. The girls use lots of elegant silver metallic dildos. The scene ends with the girls cumming all over her repeatedly with their strap on dildos. The blonde is covered in (fake) cum.

The last scene is another scorcher, almost as good as Fine's opener. Shayla LaVeaux takes it this time wearing a leopard hairpiece and thigh highs boots. In half the scene, she takes it up the ass. She is really hot!

I wish other films by Ninn were this good. Latex and Sex were disappointing in comparison, though still good. Dark Garden is nearly as good. I have seen nothing to match this film, though some recent Private films come close. Ninn is an auteur. His films deserve to be viewed not only as jack-off material (they totally function in that way) but as real, thoughtful features in their own right. I can think of no other film that combines both plot and sex so successfully.

"Shock" is a highly stylized, epic disc that contains scores of intensely erotic passages, music worthy of a
separate soundtrack CD, plus special effects and editing, that in my opinion, are beyond anything seen before in an adult DVD.
Tyffany Million plays Dr. Lillian Mangrove (though I think that Melongrove would have been more appropriate) who takes
an assignment from a medical research facility to rescue one of their assistants (Shayla LaVeaux in an award winning
performance) from the mind of Malcom Stevens (Jon Dough). This absolutely outrageous journey into the mind begins when
stone cold gargoyle statues come to life and use their rock hard appendages to entertain one of our heroines. Scene after scene
unfolds before us as Dr. Mangrove probes deeper and deeper into Stevens mind. The phrase pussy whipped takes on a literal
meaning as another one of our lovely inhabitants of the mind literally counts the strokes laid upon her aching femininity. My
guess is that most viewers will be counting their own strokes as well during this wonderfully photographed segment. Soon we
journey through an arcade of dildos which are delightfully demonstrated by it's inhabitants. When Tricia Yen shows us the
power of her pussy, the music swells to an ancient oriental song as we swell along with it!
This movie contains so much, that space doesn't allow for as thorough a commentary as is usual for this critic.
This DVD contains simply stellar production values, original music and editing. We should thank the
writer/producer Antonio Passolini (named appropriately enough after other great cinematic geniuses) and director Michael
Ninn for taking the time and expense to create this epic. We can only hope that as they plan for future works they consider the
wonderful advances in technology available for them to exploit in DVD.

This is a great movie. Not only does it have a decent story, but the action is great. This movie has a great fetish flair to it without being overdone. Men and women alike will enjoy this movie. I've watched it with several women who have been turned on by the hot action. The actresses and actors are all hot and really make this movie go. There are many very incredible scenes in this movie. The scene at the end with Shayla is incredible--I've watched it a hundred times. The video and audio are excellent. As we open, Stevens is locked away in a mental institution. Jeanna Fine comes to him in a stunning scene. Jeanna is in black and white, all done up in a Marilyn Monroe wig, fucking herself with a glowing red dialog. She talks dirty while fucking herself which is quite hot, but it's the amazing visual style that stands out here. That is, until Jeanna starts sucking dick. (Yeah, I know, it's a little heavy for a porn script isn't it?)

Sunset and Shayla put on a great g/g show and the gargoyle scene is one of the very best I have seen Shayla do, and it just edges out Jeanna's Maryilyn open for second best in the movie. Top sexual honors go to Ms. Million who just her world rocked by North and Decker. Even with these sexual highlights, the style too ofetn overtakes th sustance, making this an adult movie not for everyone. If you like the Ninn style or better yet, if you just want to see the second half of 'Latex', add this one to your must own list.

The sex is plentiful and often rather hot, but it's the way it is shot that distinguishes this movie from the rest.. Ninn's artful style is in eveidence here more than anywhere else.
There are some duds though, such as the scene where a handful of hookers play with vibrators, or the final scene with LaVeaux. The film is too long at 130 Minutes and 10 full scenes...
but you won't forget the experience!

Having been pretty harsh with the folks at AVN with
regard to their choice of "Looker" as the best film
of 1998, I have to admit they were right on the money
in choosing this DVD as the best of 1998. For quality
of content, video, and audio, it is unsurpassed. It has
every major adult actress of 1995, including Tyffany
Million, Jeanna Fine, Sunset Thomas, Shayla LaVeaux
Juli Ashton, Misty Rain, Jill Kelly, Rebecca Lord,
Caressa Savage. Hell, it is easier to try to list the
stars who aren't in this flick.

The real star is Shayla, whose scene with two gargoyles,
T.T. Boy and Vince Voyeur, has to be once of the weirdest
and hottest ever shot. One of my favorite scenes features
Jill Kelly, Misty rain, and Felecia dressed
in 18th century garb with ornamental fans dancing to
a tune very reminiscent of Madonna's "Vogue."
There is incredible visual delight throughout this movie, far too much to try
to pick out all the hot scenes. It is the best
DVD I have ever seen, and were it not for a paucity
of extras, as compared to say, Flashpoint, it would
be absolutely perfect. Put in the category of "must
own." Admit it guys, it was for such as this that
we bought the DVD player in the first place.

VCA likes to boast that they are releasing premiere titles
on DVD not recycling their catalogue. But seeing
Latex and Shock on DVD reminds me of how much I would like to see
Ninn's "Sex" on DVD. Russ Hampshire, are you out there?

All right, I must admit, I have never seen "Latex" by Michael Ninn. I guess that would have given some foresight as what to expect from "Shock". Or, I could have dropped acid and gotten similar insight. Either way, this one is definitely, shall I say, interesting.

I really couldn't put the plot together. I guess it is fairly difficult when you fast forward to the good scenes. No sound and only seeing every other frame makes it tough. Are pornos supposed to have plots anyway? I am almost embarrassed I wrote that part about the plot. I did gather that there is a couple who is experiencing some sort of mental flashback. Once again, hinting to hallucinogens. I guess the premise of the movie is to summarize their thoughts and memories. I forgot my tabs at home, so I couldn't sort things out as Ninn intended.

I have to say, the women in this film are hotties! Their silicone investments have treated them well. They have faces you want to come on, some of the better implants I've seen, asses the size of a postage stamp, and well groomed boxes. Nothing worse than wall to wall shag. I give an A+ for hygiene and casting. The guys, well, they have big cocks which makes you feel humble. Especially since I was viewing it on a 55" screen.
