New Wave Hookers

Everyone has their own list of favorite classic titles when it comes to adult film, and almost all of those lists contain the title New Wave Hookers, which I just recently caught on DVD for the very first time. Of course, compared to some of the bigger budget features that now come out of the industry, New Wave Hookers doesn't come off as impressive as it must have been back in 1985, but it's still easy to see why it has remained such a popular title over the past 15-plus years.

The film features Jamie Gillis and Jake Baker as a couple of buddies, who are watching porn together and wonder if they could start their own business, prostituting women out to gentlemen callers. Their idea is to train the women into having an intense sexual reaction whenever they listen to "New Wave" music (hence the film's title) that will get them so horny, they'll be willing to do anything with the guys they are with. The two guys fall , and we are taken into their dream...where their idea of a "New Wave Hookers" company is a reality.

For all those right-wing fundamentalist groups out there who often portray porn as being degrading to women, New Wave Hookers is probably one of the titles which is the basis for such arguments. None of the women in the movie every have sex upon them, but with the brainwashing aspect of the plotline, along with the various degrading remarks that both Gillis and Baker make about their girls (count the times Baker refers to them as "bitches"), its easy to see why someone could misinterpret this film as being one that encourages abuse of the fairer sex. Of course, what director Gregory Dark is really doing is offering up a dark comedy that in fact pokes fun at the history of the industry by presenting all these politically incorrect characters...but upon first glance, it's easy to see why many could be turned off by the events in New Wave Hookers.

As for those of you who don't care about such things, and really want to know how the sex holds up, the answer is that, overall, New Wave Hookers is a mixed bag. Gone is the scene with Traci Lords (which this reviewer has never seen), taken out because she was at the time of filming. Still in, however, is the great double penetration scene with Ginger Lynn, in which she visits the room of two college "geeks" (played by Tom Byron and Steve Powers) and quickly turns these young boys into men.

Most of the rest of the action is so-so by today's adult standards, but I did also enjoy the opening sex sequence, where Desiree Lane comes wheeling in on a pair of roller skates to take on Jamie and Steve Powers (who has the easiest dialogue to remember...playing Gillis' and Baker's "dog", and requiring him to only yell "Ring!" everytime there's a phone call). I wouldn't be surprised if mainstream director Paul Thomas Anderson got his idea for "Roller Girl" (Heather Graham) in Boogie Nights from this very scene.

New Wave Hookers was one of the earlier classics released by VCA on DVD (back in mid-1999), and thus suffers a bit from the lack of features contained on the disc. There is a slide show, a chapter selection and some other company and title information, but little else. The video quality is not bad, considering this is a shot-on-film title and VCA probably had trouble digging up a good source copy of the original, since no one could have foreseen the advent of DVD at the time of the movie's original production. So there are some defects in the actual film, but very little graininess in the transfer, proving some care was taken by the studio in providing the best possible reproduction. The audio suffers more than the video, with much of the dialogue sounding a bit muddy and aged. Still, it's pretty good for an older title.

New Wave Hookers may not be the best title to introduce your significant other to the world of adult film with, but it is an important landmark title in the history of the adult industry, and therefore, worth a spot on any serious collector's shelf.

Velvet Jones would be proud. Velvet's books from Saturday Night Live have obviously helped a group of young men choose a life of pimping hoes out. Yes, this is the plot; stupid as it may be, a story about porn star's being whores. The men interview and assign women to different men. One happens to by an Arab man, who turns out to be a very young Peter North. Later, with one of the whores visiting two college aged guys, Tom Byron finds his way onto the screen. The one catch, for these girls to fuck Peter, Tom or any of the other guys, they have been programmed to fuck only if New Wave music is playing.

Just as everything else over the last 15 years or so, things in the porn industry have obviously come a very long way. The sex in New Wave Hookers was good, from an 80's perspective, but doesn't contain the facials, constant anal sex, long wet blowjobs, etc., that are critical for successful porn today. The sexy girls of New Wave Hookers all had relatively ungroomed, hairy snatches and there is not even one facial cumshot to account for. The camera angles of good hardcore fucking were very classic and definitely well chosen though. Honesty, they save the movie. I particularly like the between the guys legs shots of dick pounding the shit out of some sexy girl's pussy doggy style or missionary. There was a little kinkiness that came along with the disc too, some anal fucking. Remember this was the 80's though, so it wasn't much. The sex was good though, from a very old-school outlook.

The girls were very sexy girls. I say that only because I grew up in the 80's and can forgive Ginger Lynn or any of the other sexy girls for having over-teased hair, outlandish clothes or not shaving their pussies. Also, Kimberly Carson from the Frat boy scene, was really one hot sexy girl too.

The DVD had a standard collection of features, with a poor photo gallery to highlight it. The audio and video quality are both very poor by today's standards. The film is over 15 years old most likely so the video could never catch up and the audio was apparently never re-dubbed either to help make New Wave Hookers to DVD quality movie.

To sum it all up, New Wave Hookers is a good movie if you like old time porn from the early 80's. The sex is good, the women are 80's-style hot with a plot that is really funny to watch. Getting to see young Peter North and young Tom Byron also was a pleasure. So much has changed since those days, but one thing certainly hasn't, it was and still is an average movie to jerk off to for the normal porn lover.

There isn't a whole lot here other than the photo gallery. Thankfully, it's really well done thanks to some great shots and a nice slide show presentation. Some VCA trailers would have been nice, or some bio pieces on the stars. On the other hand, who needs bonus material when the movie is so damn good?

I get asked all the time what my favorite porn film of all time is. The exact order of my top ten changes depending on my mood, but 'New Wave Hookers' always ends up right near the top. It is the crown jewel in the Dark Brothers royal collection of 80's porn classics. You know what's really funny though, I could write this review without ever even watching the DVD. I think I have the whole thing memorized. Some of the best sex scenes of the decade are contained in this single film. (Even if one of the hottest pairings is forever cut out thanks to the Traci Lords.) The dialog is pretty funny and the visual style has been imitated for years. Do be warned 90's porn fan, if you're sensitive to un-PC dialog and stereotyping, you may want to cover your delicate ears. On the other hand, don't do that because then you will miss on of this film's other endearing qualities, the music. This is probably the only porn film with a soundtrack I would actually listen to on its own. The opening credits are brilliantly edited and set to a very catchy tune. Hell, just watching Ginger masturbate to the beat is hotter than two thirds of 90's porn.

The story is simple. Jack Baker and Jamie Gillis are a couple of slobs who like to sit around watching porn and cracking jokes. They get lost in the idea that being pimps would be the best way to spend their lives and come up with a great idea. They should open an escort service that features those "New Wave Bitches." All they need is to find a way to program the girls to fuck whenever they hear new wave music. Gillis is wonderfully absurd, in his Anarchy T-shirt and B-Movie Chinese accent. Before anyone even has time to be adequately offended, the phone rings, ending their argument. This is no ordinary phone either. It's Steve Powers screaming "Ring, Ring" from the floor. You see, he's also their dog. If you're confused, then you are finally entering the proper frame of mind to continue with this adventure. Into this crazed scene skates Desiree Lane, a sweet little Valley girl looking for work. Baker and Gillis are perfect in their roles and prove that porn performers who can act as well as fuck are pretty rare gems indeed. OK, a quick moment of silence for the lost Traci scene. (Admit it guys, ever since you saw that scene, you've been trying to fuck a woman hard enough to make her earrings fall out.) Visually, this movie is much better on DVD. The clearer picture brings the great visual style to the forefront and the music is still the best I've ever heard. You want a quick summary? Great sex, good story, funny dialog, crisp picture and fantastic music make 'New Wave Hookers' one of the best adult films ever made.
