Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle

The world of porn meets the world of gangsta rap in Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, and it's a surprisingly entertaining marriage. I can't admit to being a fan of Snoop Dogg, or even being familiar with his music before watching this title, but he brings a sense of style and fun to a business that has not produced a fresh idea for an adult title in a long time, and I must say I found myself enjoying the proceedings.

Now before you Snoop fans get the wrong impression, the Dogg does not actually perform in any of the hardcore action on the video...he leaves that up to the professionals. But what he does do is provide us with a number of videos as well as the background music for the hardcore scenes. The talent here is mostly African-American performers, but there is a special appearance by both Farrah and Anna Malle in a scene with black stud Tony Eveready.

The funniest thing on the entire DVD doesn't happen in the title at all, but in the disclaimer before the title begins, where LFP Video Inc. states that this DVD contains the "alleged" use of marijuana and that they in no way promote the use of . Of course, they don't say anything about the promotion of indiscriminate sex, do they?!

The movie starts off with a music video with Snoop and his boys, with a number of women shaking their booty and making out with each other in the foreground and background. When the song is over, we move into the first hardcore segment of the picture, which is between Obsession and Mark Anthony. Other girls that show up in this movie include Bronze, Charlie Angel and Jade Marcela.

But while the music is entertaining, and I like the premise behind the making of the video, Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle is not without a number of flaws. The first of these being that twice during the movie, we get a blatant advertisement for Snoop Dogg's Phone Line, one of those chat lines that charge you per minute to talk to other desperate men and women. I have no problem with Snoop advertising his phone line, but this should come after the end credits have rolled, or be part of the supplemental material on the DVD.

Another problem with the disc is the hardcore sex itself, which isn't filmed in an appealing style, and doesn't provide the viewer with many angles that are appealing. In fact, the biggest mistake that Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle makes is when it shows us, or in this case doesn't show us, the cumshots. The first two cumshots in the video are barely visible, allowing the viewer to miss the beginning of the shot and see only the results. When we finally get to see a good cumshot in the Anna Malle scene, the camera cuts away from the shot too quickly and we don't get to see enough of the facial that Anna is receiving. The final cumshot in the movie, where Mr. Marcus sprays Jade Marcela with his man juice, has the camera so far away and is so poorly lit that basically all we get to see is a silhouette of the cum as it lands on Jade's face.

Basically, I think what happened with this disc is that Snoop got people who knew how to film a music video, but really couldn't handle the filming of the sex. The end credits seem to acknowledge different people for different segments of the movie, but the ultimate responsibility must fall to the overall director, Michael J. Corleone (which is either a pseudonym or his parents had a good sense of Italian humor!)

Despite it's flaws, the energy and the re-playability value of the DVD (due to its soundtrack) make this a worthwhile title to add to your collection. This is supposedly just the first of several volumes which will feature Snoop Dogg, so hopefully some of these issues will be addressed next time out.

On a more personal note, Snoop Dogg deserves a lot of credit for trying to bridge the gap between his music and the adult industry, thereby introducing some of his fans to the world of adult entertainment, as well as letting some of us on this side listen to his work for the first time.

I don't know about you, but I get turned on watching rap videos on television when they have the hot babes in skimpy clothing gyrating around like exotic dancers to the beat of the hip-hop music. This video is really just the extension of that to its logical conclusion. It's like a series of X-rated rap videos and sex scenes with rap songs playing. Snoop Dogg doesn't have sex in this video, but he is present and rapping while others get it on. I'm ambivalent about Snoop Dogg, but his songs are well-done and appropriate to this video.

If you get turned on by rap videos too, then I think you'll really like this disc. If not, then you'd be barking up the wrong tree.
