DAY DREAM believers will enjoy this one
Director James Avalon (and Nic Cramer) has come up with yet another good-looking and well-produced movie featuring some gorgeous women in DAY DREAMER, the latest release from Cal Vista Film. The premise of the film is cliché, but effective: A writer of erotica, played by the typically blonde and gorgeous Claudia Chase, expresses her innermost fantasies through the power of the pen (or laptop as the case may be) which are then played out for the viewers' convenience. This exact device was employed at its most popular in Andrew Blake's HIDDEN OBSESSIONS, a breakthrough movie which first introduced the world to Janine and Julia Ann (and their icicle dildo). Unfortunately, since as of this writing HIDDEN OBSESSIONS is not yet available on DVD, the discriminating porn fan will have to settle for DAY DREAMER, which is definitely an inferior film.
There is no doubt that Mr. Avalon and Mr. Cramer score when it comes to beautiful women and hot sex. However, with the frequent use of condoms, questionable camera work, and rather unimaginative sexual situations reduce this ambitious film to being just another average video. Roxanne Hall and Dru Barrymore absolutely sizzle in their opening lesbian affair which takes place poolside. When Billy Glide decides to join the party, their threesome is genuinely hot, with plenty of hard fucking and enthusiastic sucking which ultimately ends in an oral cumshot shared by the two blondes. But the cinematography is jumpy at times, with oddly chosen angles which get in the way of the climax. The alternate angles are really no better, and in fact are sometimes incongruent with the original scene, where the action may lag behind for a few seconds at a time. Although this was my favorite scene in the movie, thanks to Roxanne's magnetic sexual performance, I felt it suffered definitely due to the post-production problems.
Claudia Chase, Amber Michaels and Sheila Stone do a terrific all-girl scene with enough kissing and caressing to satisfy a lesbian porn connoisseur such as myself. A strap-on dildo is used, but toy play is kept to a minimum, freeing the girls to enjoy each others' bodies without foreign objects. Unfortunately, the movie moves into a downhill roll when the nasty Dick Nasty is seen in two consecutive scenes, first porking sexy blonde T.J. Heart who vamps it up by a swimming pool, and then in a threesome with John Decker where both double penetrate Oceana. Although I try to ignore male performers when viewing pornos (unless it's Ron Jeremy, where I usually skip the scene altogether), Dick Nasty's presence is just too annoyingly overwhelming to ignore.
Dee and Blondi Anderson take their sweet time to please Vince Voyeur in a so-so scene that seems to feature more handjob than blowjob work, and Claudia Chase also takes on two guys at the end of the movie for a somewhat mundane conclusion. I tried to take special interest in Misty Rain's ménage a trois with Bettina and longtime boyfriend Chad Thomas, but since I've seen Misty and beau in much, much hotter threesomes (especially in a spectacular three-way with Francesca Le in THE ANAL DIARY OF MISTY RAIN from Elegant Angel), this scene was bound to disappoint. Misty still looks great riding on his cock cowgirl style, but its only status quo as far as her history of performances go.
As stated previously, this film has an annoying tendency to change camera angles and shots a little too frequently and unnecessarily, the results of which can impact on the overall sexual heat of the scenes. I have no idea if this is the result of Cal Vista's use of the "2ND ANGLE" feature, but it really distracts from one's enjoyment of the film. Even worse, there is a non-removable display on the bottom right of the screen whenever the angle feature is employed, which is unfortunately typical of many Metro Videos. Otherwise, video and audio quality are very good and the extras on this disc are especially entertaining, including a behind the scenes documentary which spotlights the major actresses carefully honing their craft for the video screen.
DAY DREAMER could have been a favorite if not for all the problems which detracted from my viewing experience. If you have yet to pick up similar "fantasy" films like ELEMENTS OF DESIRE, HOUSE OF DREAMS, SECRETS, NIGHT TRIPS, NIGHT TRIPS 2, EROTIC VISIONS and other works by Andrew Blake or Cameron Grant, then I would get those classics before this release.
