Raven Takes Us On a Tour of Hell in Underworld

By Spooky
Michael Raven has proven that he is the best director currently working in the adult industry, and he delivers again with Underworld, a stunning visual journey into a world of evil, and one man's attempt to rescue his lost love from that hellish domain.

Dillion Day stars as Orpheus Greenspan, a man who seemingly possesses some god-like powers. His girl (Ava Vincent) has died and gone to Underworld, and Orpheus is on a rescue mission to bring her back. To guide him on his journey, he meets up with a cab driver, Hermie, played by Ron Jeremy in one of the best roles he has ever been given. Hermie is assigned to take Orpheus to Pluto Hades (Hershel Savage), the leader of Underworld and also the uncle of Orpheus.

On the way to meet Pluto, Orpheus gets Hermie to stop at what appears to be a local brothel, but the girls here are much more evil than one would assume. Orpheus changes his mind about being with the three luscious creatures (played by Jessica Drake, Ryan Conner and Zoe), but Evan Stone is there for the girls to have fun with. The sex scene is stunning both in the erotic sense and in the visual sense, as the sex is intercut with flashes of the women as they truly are, beasts (possibly vampires) with sharp claws and fangs.

In the meantime, Orpheus has made his way to a local bar, where he runs across Taylor St. Clair who tells him a little more about the secrets of Underworld and also mentions a mysterious figure known only as the "Dark Man", who Taylor winds up running into when she exits into an alley. The "Dark Man" is played by Lexington Steele, and he gets involved in a extremely hot scene with Taylor that concludes with a fantastic facial. But just who is the "Dark Man" and what is his purpose? Director Raven never tells us for sure, and the viewer is left to his or her own conclusions about the character.

Orpheus eventually strikes a deal with Pluto in which he is able to take his love out of Underworld...but has he really won anything at all? As the story concludes, I couldn't help but wonder if this was only the first chapter in an ongoing story about some very interesting characters in an fascinating universe.

As stated at the beginning of this review, there is perhaps no one in the industry today who makes better adult features than Michael Raven. His visual style and storytelling abilities are of such a caliber that he may be one of the few directors in porn who could just as easily have success in the mainstream world of entertainment. Raven understands that by setting up a great story, the sexual action becomes more intense and erotic for the viewer, and makes for a great piece of entertainment. He selects stars who know how to act, as well as perform for the camera, and the results are incredible. With each new film, he seems to top what he has done before, and he has shown that adult films can rival mainstream ones in look, story and action.

Unfortunately for us DVD owners, Sin City doesn't seem to want to take the time or make the investment in presenting Raven's films with the kind of attention that they deserve. The transfer of this shot-on-film title is grainy and the audio, while not the worse you are going to hear on an adult DVD, is only average at best. Plus, Sin City seems determined to make all buyers sit or fast-forward through their tedious phone sex and website ads, even though they are accessible from the menu and could be viewed at any time at the leisure of the DVD viewer. This is what I like to refer to as the "Disney Law of DVD" (Disney front-loads their mainstream DVDs with trailers because they feel that the only way they are going to get viewed is if they make the viewer sit though them!). On the plus side are the bloopers and behind the scenes segment that are included on the disc. The behind the scenes segment is the real gem of the two, as Evan Stone gets his chance to shine as he shows a little of his comedic ability in this fun look at the making of Underworld.

As of this writing, it's only three months into the new year, and Michael Raven already has two of the best DVD titles (strictly from a feature perspective, not from an overall DVD perspective) of 2001. One great title could be passed off as a fluke; two great titles could merely be attributed to luck...but when a director consistently churns out one great movie after another, there is only one word for it: talent. Do yourself a favor, and check out some of this great director's work. Porn will never seem the same again.
