Rookies

Rookies - a gonzo flick that encompasses some potential. Firstly, gonzo style films give that "reality" kind of feel to viewers. That's cool sometimes. You know...that feeling like you are on the set or peeking through the bushes just watching real people partaking in real sex. It's a welcome change of pace from plot-driven films. Don't get me wrong - I do enjoy well-made storyline features! Simply put, "This reviewer likes lots-n-lots of variation!" Anyway, let's move on to what exactly makes this title work. But wait...we should cover the pertinent production info first...

This movie was produced by Horizon, a division of Heatwave. The director/videographer was not credited, and I don't know why. Being gonzo, of course the director spoke to the talent candidly and, at times, quite amusingly. I liked the casualness of his demeanor. This casual attitude made the in-between sex scenes flow quite smoothly. Frankly I don't understand why he wouldn't have given himself credit in the video opening. And that leads us to the camera work. I use the label "director/videographer" because it seems clear that this person acted as both simultaneously. Ultimately a one-man-film-crew at work. That's okay. It worked. The video work was smooth. The angles exemplified the action well. From my point of view... angles are a key component of any film. "How about the sound?", you ask. Well, the sound is about average for a feature originally shot on video. The DVD is in Dolby, but remember; shot-on-video!

Finally! Yes we're here. It's time to talk about the stars, the sex and setting. Yeahhh! Okay. Now that we're all calm again - stars. I doubt highly that you will recognize any of the starlets. As the title states - Rookies - they are unknowns. Rookies is not exactly accurate, though. From some of the dialogue between director and talent, we find that these ladies have all done some kind of on-camera work previously. It apparently was not enough previous work to honor them the coveted title of "pornstar". Well... at least for now. Here's a look at the female talent pool; Ashley Anne, Taylee, Bronze and Diana Devoe. Now here's something that did irritate me...why don't they at least inform the viewer of who's who? Assuming that few will recognize a cast of amateurs or newbies, how about titling each segment with names. I happen to like being aware of who's doing what to whom! Wouldn't you agree? This is one thing about some porn films that just gnaws away at me like a starving lion chewing the side out of a freshly taken-down gazelle. Wow.

I feel better now. How about male talent? I think that some will recognize a few of the guys in Rookies. Todd Alexander, Mark Wood and Steve Taylor are maybe lesser known, yet have been in other films. I did not find any of them overwhelmingly charismatic, but they kept it up and that counts in a sex film.

Our favorite part - sex! I liked this DVD overall, so... of course the sex was good! All the scenes are filmed on a poolside patio of a Florida home - on a beautiful day. The first couple of scenes are fair to good. Then comes scene three. I especially enjoyed this pairing. It has everything; oral, blowjobs, finger-fucking and a marathon anal on patio furniture!!! I could go on about it but I don't want to spoil your fun. So, yes I do recommend Rookies as a decent gonzo title to add to your collection. Don't expect much for the DVD's extras. A couple previews, a photo-gallery and web access are about all it's got. This one stands on its sexual content, not the additives...and that's okay sometimes.
