2003 AVN Awards

As someone who spends probably an unhealthy amount of time reviewing adult DVD material, the annual release of the AVN Awards Show on DVD is something I always look forward to. Not only because it's a great way to get a glimpse of many of last year's best titles, but also because it's a great way to see what your favorite adult stars are like in "real life".

Clocking in at 130 minutes (which doesn't include the 50 minutes that are devoted to interviews elsewhere on the DVD), most of the major awards presented during the 2003 show are featured here. The festivities start out with a funny bit entitled "What is the best way to win an AVN Award?", which includes humorous comments from many of your favorites in the industry. The show itself is hosted by Chloe and "comedian" Doug Stanhope, and the former proves to be much more entertaining than the latter (which is why I put the word "comedian" in quotes!).

Aside from the fun in seeing some of your favorite stars come up on stage to get their awards (and hear some of the goofy things many of them have to say...acting as if they won Oscars or something), the camera occasionally checks out a star in the crowd and gets them to flash their tits for the camera...something that I'm sure the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas (which hosted the event) would be just thrilled to hear about! Of course, if this kind of thing happened at the Oscars, a lot more people might tune in!

But those craving some real hardcore action need not worry, as after most of the awards are presented, we get to see a clip from the actual movie. So although this is a VCA release, expect to see clips from titles that were made by Wicked Pictures, Vivid, Evil Angel and others on this DVD. While complete scenes are not shown, the clips always include a cumshot, and some of the titles you'll get a peek at here include Wicked's Breathless, Evil Angel's The Fashionistas and Vivid's I Dream of Jenna.

Perhaps even more fun than watching the show itself is watching the interview segments that are contained separately on this DVD in a featurette than runs about 50-minutes. Since these interviews took place before the show, the best way to watch these is prior to watching the main presentation. Many of your favorite girls and guys are interviewed here, including Chloe, Nina Hartley, Tawny Roberts, Jesse Jane, Devon, Inari Vachs, Dee, Hannah Harper, Stormy, Steven St. Croix, Evan Stone and Brad Armstrong. It also gives viewers a better look at what each performer was wearing that night...and if you think the Oscars have some wild and tacky outfits, wait until you see some of these. That being said, I have to give credit to both Aurora Snow and Violet Blue (who are not in the interviews, but are on-stage during the show) who know the real meaning of "classy" when it comes to selecting an outfit.

Other options on this DVD include the option to jump right to the presentation of some of the more important awards, in addition to an overall chapter selection for the title. There are also trailers for Unreal, Cashmere, Raw and Shock, all winners in previous years for "Best DVD" at the awards show. Finally, the DVD contains a slide show that lists all of the 2003 nominees for induction into the Hall of Fame.

This isn't a DVD you buy to "get off" to, but it's one that is nice to have if you are a die-hard adult film aficionado and a collector of adult DVDs. Now if only they could give out an award for "Best Adult Reviewer" all would be well in the world...
