Daydreams, Nightdreams

I was really impressed with this DVD. It features some of the top stars of the 90's, has some awesome sex scenes, and is just plain old fun to watch. The film was originally shot back in 1996 so it's almost a decade old. It was originally released on VHS and is now on DVD as a VCA Classic edition. I was a little hesitant when I first saw looked at the boxcover. In the back of my mind I saw visions of some of the absolutely horrible movies that came from that era. I must now say that I was very pleasantly surprised. Bud Lee, the director, made a wonderful movie that will stand the test of time. The key ingredients in this movie's success are the acting and the plot. Both are really strong here and together they make this movie immensely viewable.

To be forthright and honest I must admit that I really do prefer the modern day crop of adult film stars. Generally they are younger, much more nubile, and most convey a much more carefree attitude. However, this film shows that these same characteristics were very much alive a decade ago.

The film centers on Shayla LaVeaux. She plays an overworked, underpaid, and very much underappreciated legal secretary working at a law office. You learn very quickly through little looks and body language that she has a thing for her boss, played by Randy West. However, Shayla is too soft-spoken and demure to make any advances or to have her true feelings and desires made known. In other words, she's pretty sexually repressed.

The movie starts with Shayla literally tearing the office apart while searching for a lost affidavit for the "Blair" file. Jill Kelly, Shayla's co-worker, is actually responsible for filing it, but is too preoccupied making personal long distance phone calls to be of any real assistance. Randy West starts to get a little agitated because he needs the affidavit and this pushes Shayla to stay well past closing time to search for it. Meanwhile, Mrs. Blair, played by Asia Carrera, arrives to speak with Randy about her upcoming case. Shayla keeps looking for the file and starts searching other offices. In a rather humorous scene, Shayla keeps finding her co-workers fucking each other. She gets a little agitated and chastises them for literally fucking around while her career is falling into the proverbial toilet. She complains that her boss would never screw around like that and holds him up as a champion of virtue. This of course leads right into Shayla walking into Randy's office only to find Asia on her knees sucking his cock. Shayla is absolutely horrified and feels utterly betrayed.

This is the setup then for the basis of the movie. Shayla has been betrayed (at least in her mind anyways) and is very upset. She returns home and confides her feelings of pain to her roommate. The roommate, played by Missy, tries to comfort Shayla. She suggests that Shayla get some and prescribes a couple pills to help her along. Shayla reluctantly agrees and takes the medication. Very quickly she is . However, the fun is just beginning as her repressed feelings start bubbling to surface and become manifest through a series of bizarre and highly erotic dreams. The dreams reveal an exuberant sexuality that Shayla has possessed all along but has kept hidden. From them she learns to be comfortable with herself and unafraid to express both her sexuality and her desires.

The only problem that I could see was the quality of the video. Compared to today's new releases, this DVD is pretty lacking. The picture is darker and the quality just isn't there. However it is understandable. This film was originally shot for VHS at a time before the adult industry switched over to a much higher quality digital format.

The special features are pretty nonexistent here. VCA apparently didn't see the need to put much on the disk. There is the requisite photo gallery and several trailers for different movies. However, there isn't anything exciting such as behind the scenes documentaries or interviews with the director and the cast. However it's understandable because this movie wasn't intended for DVD.

Overall, this is a really good movie. Bud Lee did an excellent job casting the actors because they all work really well together. The chemistry among the cast is excellent and the sex is wonderful.
