Having made their mark on the gonzo world, Red Light's decision to start shooting features made perfect sense. The success of Evil Angel features like The Fashionistas, The Ass Collector, and Tales From the Crack have shown that there is a huge demand for high quality features stuffed with nasty hardcore action; mostly meaning lots of anal and no condoms. James Avalon met this demand with the first release, Darkside, and looks to continue the trend here with Sex Pix . Drawing heavily from Memento, Sex Pix tells its story in reverse order, providing a nice change-up of narrative structure...at least for a porno.

Like its mainstream source of inspiration, amnesia plays a key role in the story. This is immediately evident in the first scene as Sunny Lane wakes up in a motel room wondering where and who she is. The snapshots in her purse are more puzzling, showing her dressed in fetish gear and posing with different women and men. Even fighting off Evan Stone with a broken bottle does nothing to refresh her memory. The story then backtracks to the night before where Evan and Sunny were joined by two prostitutes played by Kelly Wells and Isabella Stanza. A confused Sunny participates briefly in the four-way, but it's Kelly and Isabella who get Evan's attention by offering up their asses. There's some good anal and ass-to-mouth action here, with Evan eventually plopping his wad on Kelly's well worn asshole. Not to be outdone, Isabella licks the cum out of Kelly's ass crack and swaps it with her.

A few more details of Sunny's condition are revealed as the story rewinds a few hours before the motel romp. At this point Kurt Lockwood and sex club owner (Veronica Hart) are trying to hide Sunny from Evan. They take Sunny to the club owner's house so she can rest. Sunny writes a seemingly innocent inscription on the back of the picture of her with Kurt which could lead to more intense drama in her confusing future.

Red Light has put together another stellar two-disc package for their second feature. Shot on high-definition video, the transfer sports a wide screen anamorphic transfer which looks much crisper than Darkside. But are still some instances of pixelation and blotchy blacks, most notable in the darker scenes. The stereo audio track is extremely well done with great mixing throughout, particularly when the fight can be heard in the background of the orgy scene. Still, a 5.1 mix would have put it over the top.

This set strikes it big when it comes to extras. The first disc contains a decent audio commentary with Sunny and James Avalon as well as the feature's trailer. But the rest of the extras are packed on the second disc, including the 24-minute behind the scenes featurette showcasing some on-set goofing, interviews, and hardcore. The 14-minute bonus scene is an extension of the feature's concluding scene as Veronica Jett gives Brett Rockman a blowjob. If the goofing in the BTS wasn't enough, check out the 5-minute blooper reel. The disc also includes three separate galleries (hardcore, glamour, and scene) but the shots are all quite small. Rounding out the disc are trailers for Darkside and Avalon's upcoming western, Bustful of Dollars.

Despite its derivative nature, Sex Pix is a smart feature with great production values and enough hardcore action to satisfy any porn fan. Although all five scenes deliver the goods, none of them are exemplary. There's also a few moments (mostly after pop shots) where the girls play to the camera, effectively knocking down the voyeuristic barrier offered by the feature format. Still, these incidents are little more than annoyances which do little to impact the action or story. Hopefully Red Light and Avalon can keep cranking these features out, because even gonzo fans need a break from the unyielding deluge of couch porn.
