The SHOW's over for EPISODE 2

By Diesel
Like the first edition of this long-anticipated series, THE DEVINN LANE SHOW, EPISODE 2 (subtitled "LESS TALK, MORE ACTION") is a big, fat disappointment, and clearly recommended for the most ardent Devinn fans (of which I am one, by the way), or else for the most undiscriminating connoisseur of hardcore material. Of course, it wouldn't be too unreasonable to cut the title some slack, since this is the early work of a novice director and producer (namely, the star herself). But despite my charitable outlook, I couldn't muster much interest in EPISODE 2, which clearly does not meet the erotic standards of Devinn's better, performance-only flicks (such as VEGAS OR BUST and IN STYLE).

Based more or less on the comedy-variety shows of yesteryear, audiences are treated to some rather droll scenarios, (including the shamelessly self-promotional "Wicked Elements" which spotlights Stephanie Swift and Devinn in a toy demonstration using "Devinn Lane's Pearl Dolphin"). The sexual set-ups and themes are fairly original in concept, but executed routinely and sometimes amateurishly. With the exception of Amber Michaels, whose blowjobs are simply amazing, none of the actresses here impress, and all have done better elsewhere. Kristal Summers is given a dramatic introduction by our hostess, but she's rather shy when interviewed in front of the camera. The video is supposed to give viewers some insight into the petite brunette as she prepares for a scene blindfolded and without knowing who her partners are going to be. But this unexciting footage seems better suited for the "Behind The Scenes" segment, and her matched threesome with Eric Masterson and Billy Glide is uneventful and yawn inducing.

Even the nicely directed girl-girl scene between Stephanie and Devinn lacks heat. The girls go through the motions after engaging in some seemingly impromptu banter, but the feeling is robotic. Not even the tepid kissing is convincing enough to make me want to give their vignette another look. The same sense of physical obligation is present in Devinn's outdoor affair with T.J. Hart. Sure, both look great in a bikini, and they wield their respective dildos on themselves and each other skillfully enough, but nothing outside of utter predictability comes of their pairing.

Much, much better is Amber's one-on-one with Frank Fortuna which is hot and bristles thanks to her energy and enthusiasm. Her screams and moans alone are nearly worth the price of admission. (As with VEGAS OR BUST, Devinn gets onstage to sing before the real action starts, but we don't get to hear her vocal talents.) A chaotic three couple fuck fest (featuring Evan Stone and Gia, Pat Myne and Kaylynn as well as Ruby and Jaye Crew) follows immediately thereafter, though we're to endure some hammy overacting by Evan Stone in an unconvincing and clumsy set-up. Kaylynn and Gia take their respective cumshots to the mouth, but the camera cuts away right when it looks like Kaylynn was about to swallow her tongue-filled load. Ruby simply allows Jaye's load to land on her butt crack.

Nacho Vidal and Nicole Sheridan make lust on a couch, though the anal shots make this vignette worth watching. The video ends rather anti-climactically with a masturbation scene spotlighting newcomer, Madison Day, who is cute enough, but cannot save this SHOW. (And besides, female masturbation is not my favorite sub-genre of the pornographic arts.)

Video quality is good throughout, though the dialogue is sometimes difficult to hear during the outdoor sequences and while some of the interviews are taking place. There is a Bonus Sex scene available within the extra, in which Ruby and Jaye have anal sex. It's a fun little affair, although clearly not enough to save the disc. The "Making Of..." featurette, playfully hosted by Devinn, is likewise enjoyable and amusing. (Surprisingly, Kristal seems more comfortable talking to the camera in this segment than in the main feature.)

It's clear that a lot of work went into this flick, and as a director, Devinn tries hard to serve up a quality product; certainly, no one would question the quality of the talent involved. Like the STAR WARS movies, the first and second episodes of THE DEVINN LANE SHOW are watchable, and at times even enjoyable, but by no means do they attain greatness. This series needs to do better or audiences might demand a mid-season replacement.
