Not Quite Makin' It

By Spooky
When the selling point of a movie is the fact that its star is actually singing two of the songs in the film, adult viewers have the right to get a little wary. Of course, we all remember when Jenna Jameson screeched out the theme song for The Wicked One, a title which ironically was also directed by the director of Makin' It, Brad Armstrong.

Fortunately the music this time around doesn't have us looking around the living room wondering who's strangling the cat. It's not Grammy material (or even American Idol worthy), granted, but considering these are adult stars crooning out some original material, it's not that bad either. The most impressive performance actually comes from Joel Lawrence...but we'll get to that in a bit.

Where Makin' It doesn't quite make it is in the plot department. At a running length of 116 minutes, the story is slow and often uninteresting, and viewers may very well find themselves fast forwarding to get to the sex and the musical performances, which are the most noteworthy things on this title.

Stephanie Swift stars as a young woman who is leaves home to go to the big city to see her fame as a singer. She finds a small club run by Herschel Savage and gets her shot to go onstage, but totally locks up with stage fright once she gets out there and has to run off in tears. She befriends another signer at the club, played by Joel Lawrence, who has a big crush on her, but winds up bedding a bartender played by Randy Spears, who turns out to be a big-time jerk.

Stephanie eventually sees that Joel is the man she really loves and finds her voice after a close friend overdoses. The conclusion of the movie has Stephanie performing on stage for the first time, and while Kelly Clarkson certainly has nothing to worry about, Ms. Swift isn't horrible, which may surprise a lot of viewers.

As for the sex, the movie opens with an outdoors scene between Stephanie and Trevor Zen on the hood of a car. One of the nicer segments in the film is a threesome between Brad Armstrong, Nikita Denise and Lezley Zen in a hotel room, which only figures into the plot because Stephanie is staying in the room next door, and listens to the action by holding a glass up to the wall! Aria, who also sings in this movie, has a coupling with Herschel Savage, which includes some anal action and a nice facial. Steph has three more sex scenes in the film: a lesbian orgy with Sydnee Steele, Nicole Sheridan, Lola and Devon Michaels; a scene with Randy Spears; and a closing segment with Joel Lawrence. Additionally, there's also a short, blowjob-only sequence with Lola and Randy in the alley outside the club.

The most entertaining portion of the entire movie, however, is the few minutes where Joel Lawrence gets to sing on stage. The name of the song is "Blue Balls" and it literally has to be heard to be believed! Much like the "big number" in every Disney musical, you literally want to get on your feet and demand an encore when Joel is finished with his number. It's almost a shame that such a rousing two minutes of film is dumped in with this otherwise average production. Oh well...perhaps Wicked will release a single...or better yet, have Joel perform at the AVN awards next year!

While the movie has its up and downs, Wicked once again doesn't skim on the bonus material, including a commentatry track, behind the scenes segment, photo galleries and more on the DVD.

Because the sex is decent and Joel had me in hysterics with his song (which he also wrote, by the way), I'm giving Makin' It a marginal recommendation. It probably would have been a better movie with a bit of editing, but it's still entertaining enough for at least one viewing.
