Midnight Librarians

Jim Holliday's films are starting to become interchangeable with one another (meaning you can pretty much expect the same thing from each outing), but that doesn't mean they aren't still a whole lot of fun to watch. Holliday's latest epic, Midnight Librarians, brings us exactly what fans would expect from one of his titles: a whole lot of "fun and fluff" (as Jim himself refers to it); and a whole lot of beautiful women.

The movie jumps back and forth in time, from the Los Angeles of yesterday to the Los Angeles of today, but there's really very little actual story here, just Jim trying out different filming styles and having some fun with the actors involved. The result is a movie that can be enjoyed regardless of whether you watch it all at once, or a little bit of it at a time.

Holliday doesn't bore us with exposition at the beginning of the film, either - jumping straight into the sex. First up is a pool table tryst between blond-haired Chandler and the recently retired Dale DaBone. There's some anal action here in both the reverse cowgirl (always the best angle for anal) and missionary positions that fans should enjoy.

After some nicely-filmed opening credits, in which all the actresses of the film come out in pairs so they can be properly identified to fans, we get a three-way lesbian scene between Holly Hollywood, Shayla LaVeaux and Allysin Chaynes. Sure enough (as is the case in at least the last dozen or so Holliday movies), there's plenty of toe sucking and ass rimming - activities which Holliday (on the DVD's commentary track) once again denies having any attraction to, insisting he puts it in his films because fans enjoy watching it. Personally, all the foot worship is getting a little old for this reviewer, but apparently consumers really enjoy it, as almost all Holliday films wind up on the best-sellers list at one time or another during their release.

The best segment of the movie is a game show called "Fuck The Girl Next Door", in which Evan Stone plays the host, Monica Mayhem plays the "Girl Next Door" and Dillion Day and Calli Cox are the winning couple. The amount of time the game takes up may annoy some fans who just want to see hardcore action, but I enjoyed watching the talent in this scene obviously having a great time with the set-up that Holliday had prepared for them.

The best sexual action occurs during the second half of the movie, as we get to see Holly Hollywood masturbating as she watches Belladonna blow Dillion Day; Evan Stone getting it on with Skarlet Fever (aka Kristina Black); and an all-girl orgy, featuring most of the women listed in the cast.

The best sex is saved for last, as cute, petite Gauge is paired up with Evan Stone for a really enjoyable coupling. The ending of the film is a bit of a shock, but Holliday can't resist putting a happy twist on it (something he seems to regret doing after listening to his comments on the director's audio track).

The video is top-notch on this VCA disc, and the audio is above-average as well, although I did notice that the voice-overs and music tended to be much louder than the dialogue coming from the actors.

The DVD also contains some nice bonus features, including the already-mentioned director's commentary (with Holliday, Holly Hollywood and Chandler), multiple angles, extended scenes, cast bios, a slide show and three previews for other Jim Holliday movies.

There's nothing complicated about Midnight Librarians. There's no lame attempt to do a story as good as you see in mainstream; no special effects or fancy sets; not even a claim by Holliday that his movie is going to "bring adult into the mainstream" (how many times have we heard that comment from over-confident porn directors?!). No - Holliday just delivers what he has always delivered: good hardcore action with a sense of fun about it. And that may be the best reason why Midnight Librarians should claim a spot on your adult DVD shelf.

Another same old, same old from Jim Holliday. Lots of pretty girls engaging in routine sex. He seems to be hung-up on rimming, since practically every sex scene has an asshole being licked in it. I was glad to see Holly Hollywood as the actress who holds the film together. As well as being a hottie, she can really act too.
