Jana Cova: Scream

I know we're not supposed to judge books by their covers, but when it comes to books, I like the cover to look nice. David Winner's "Brilliant Orange" is one such example of a well designed cover. It's simple, it's attractive, and it gets to the point stylishly. Films and music act much the same way. And with porn? How are you not supposed to judge it by the cover? Creampie Surprise 6, Anal Recruiters #2, and Freckle Fantasies are a few of the titles on my wishlist that I know nothing about, but look sexy as hell on the cover. So it's with some apprehension that I approach Scream from Digital Playground. There's something about the photo on the cover of Jana Cova that looks very much as though it's from more than a decade ago, and it hurts my expectations for the film dramatically.

Alektra Blue, Jana, and Angie Savage have the first scene to just the three of them, but the fake fellatio on domestic bottles just showed a level of class that completely contrasted with the surroundings. There's no plausibility here, and there's very little heat, either. I'm not buying into it, and that's essential for porn to work. The fact that the ambient sound is turned up so loud hurts matters as well, as there's no music to hide clinking glass sounds and the like. It quickly turns into a toy fest with constant moaning, a kind of lesbian scene I would have expected probably a decade or more ago. Too much giggling, too much unbelievable behavior. I got bored to the point of fast forwarding most of this scene.

Maya Hills has the second scene, and it's a boy-girl couch scene. The camera angles to open are just all wrong, going from too close-up without an establisher, to too far away, to wandering all over the place, none of them giving us a good sense of what exactly is going on. The only sound is that of breathing, which got to be more annoying than anything. It's decent work from both stars, but the silence combined with this being a scene on a couch - it's hard to have a variety of positions on a couch - means that, overall, this one just doesn't come off. The reverse cowgirl anal is admittedly very nice, though it seemed like there was a stunt Maya for the first couple of minutes: they'd shoot the crotch for a few seconds, then switch to a shot from the waist up, going back and forth. With the difference in lighting between the two, it looks like two different scenes. It's a decent facial in the end, though I wanted them to go straight from the rather nice ass fucking to it, but there was a half hearted blowjob sequence before he jerks off on her face. All the momentum was lost.

The battle of the curious hair was up next with Jana's blonde mop doing battle with Brianna Love's swept back do. I know I shouldn't be picky about hairstyles, but it's part of the face, and the face is very important to me in a porn star. Neither lady really does it for me as a result, and the lack of heat in the scene doesn't' help either. I'm not sure what the director was thinking at times with the camera angles, actually switching to a shot behind Jana that looks more like an outtake or behind the scenes shot. I go for the fast forward again.

At least I enjoy watching Rachel Roxxx. She takes on two guys in her scene, though we're again dealing with really strange camera angles, many of them far too close in, other far away for no discernible reason. Something I had been noticing in other scenes as well, something I had ascribed to lube being poured or something, is a kind of waterfall effect in the video, something that appears to be in the transfer. It's very distracting, and further takes away from the poor camera angle choice. It's a shame, too, as watching Rachel do reverse cowgirl, however brief, is really very lovely. The only thing additionally I could hope she'd do is anal, but I'll live without it, as she really is that great to watch. She takes two in the face to end the scene. Rachel's almost enough for me to forget about the poor directing.

I just don't really know what's going on here, especially from a studio with the quality of Digital Playground. Not every title is going to be a classic, I know, and even Wicked makes mistakes (with titles like Forever Is The Night. But it's the little things that Digital Playground usually gets right, and they really seem to have blown them with Scream.
