Now I'm hearing the argument from both ends: customers are happy with DVD; or customers are happy just watching porn on their computers. These are customers who have never seen porn on a Blu-ray player - or more specifically, customers who have never seen a Digital Playground Blu-ray.

Nurses is exactly the reason you upgraded to high definition, or at least the reason if you're a horny and hopeless fan of hardcore entertainment, like myself. The picture quality on this release is top-notch, with the 1080p image simply sparkling with sharpness and clarity. Think pornstars don't look hot when fully exposed in HD? I challenge you to check out Jenna Haze's opening anal session, Stoya's several appearances, or Sasha Grey's wild threesome and come to the same conclusion. Just like any mainstream film, there is a way of shooting in HD and making the girls look glamorous, and Robby D. is a director that knows how to do it.

Readers can take a look at my DVD review of this title for a more detailed description of the action in each of Nurses eight scenes, but needless to say owners of this Blu-ray will certainly get their money's worth with a movie that clocks in at well over three hours (195 minutes to be exact). Plus, while DVD owners have to switch halfway through the film and swap discs, this Blu-ray has the advantage of allowing one to view the entire movie uninterrupted from beginning to end...assuming you don't have to "excuse" yourself at any point for reasons I don't think I need to go into in this review!

The only real downside to this release is the same problem the DVD had: the lack of significant bonus materials. Viewers do get a 12-minute behind the scenes featurette; a 3 ½-minute slide show, and 7 trailers (all of which are in HD), but it's really a shame Digital Playground has not yet stepped up to the plate and become the first Blu-ray company to provide picture-in-picture video commentary, BD-Live capabilities, or some of the other exclusives one can only find on the Blu-ray format.

But compared to all other adult Blu-rays on the market right now, the only real competition Nurses has in terms of A/V quality and entertainment value is, quite frankly, other HD titles from Digital Playground, like Pirates 2, Cheerleaders and Babysitters. If you already own those releases, and are looking for something of equal value, Nurses offers the treatment you've been looking for.

After seeing what Digital Playground has done with Babysitters, Cheerleaders and now Nurses, they could do Carnival Freaks next time around and I'd be there. Nurses is every bit as sexy as I would have hoped, and actually more funny than I would have expected. It's as if Director Robby D. was determined that everyone have a good time during the shoot, and the results show on screen.

Nurses is released on DVD on a 2-disc set, with the first half of the movie on Disc 1, and the second half plus all the bonus materials on Disc 2. The title was shot using the relatively new "Red One" hi-def cameras, which capture the look of film while still showing off the sharpness that HD provides. Of course, standard def can only look so good, but those with Blu-ray players will definitely want to consider that version of this release (my separate Blu-ray review covers how great Nurses looks in that media).

Nurses is set in a hospital where Katsuni plays the "head nurse" (there's a pun there, I know) and fellow Digital Playground Contract Girls Jesse Jane, Stoya, and Shay Jordan play fellow nurses. Non-contract girl Shyla Stylez is also a nurse, while Jenna Haze, Sasha Grey and Riley Steele are candy stripers. Shawna Lenee and Gabriella Fox also make an appearance as friends of a patient - but don't worry, they dress up as nurses for their scene too!

In the first scene, Evan Stone has been admitted to the hospital because he's lodged a Barbie doll up his behind. This leads to a conversation between him and Jenna Haze in which she details how much she enjoys playing with her own asshole. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Digital Playground didn't use Jenna's presence (or Sasha Grey's for that matter) to team her up with some of their Contract Girls in this release - but beggars can't be choosers, so it's hard to complain too much about how some of the "guest stars" in Nurses were used.

Of all the nurses in Nurses, no one looks better in (or out!) of uniform than Stoya. Perhaps it's the fact that she looks less like a pornstar and more like a girl-next-door, or perhaps it's because her milky-white skin goes great with her milky white uniform, but there's no denying how hot Stoya looks in this release. Still, even with the lack of extras, Nurses is one of the best adult releases we've seen so far this year, and one most porn fans are probably still going to be talking about at year's end.

This is the kind of movie I love reviewing. Its got almost everything I could want. For those trying to get a feel for what its about and how its presented: Its your standard horny nurse story set in a regular hospital. The difference here is the production quality is far above most similar films. Same quality as Pirates and Pirates 2, but with much better action. They dont cut up the sex scenes to make room for horrible acting and pointless plot. The cinematography is actually much better than the Pirates movies, closer to what we saw in Stoya Atomic Tease (which you NEED to watch if you havent already). As is advertised, this film was clearly shot in HD and then given an excellent transfer to DVD. Video is crisp and clear the entire time and since the production value is so good you will actually appreciate that. They did not spare content for presentation however, and all your modern favorites are here, sucking and fucking like they were meant to. Jenna Haze and Stoya have particularily good scenes, unfortunately we dont get much past them. The movie stops at 1 hour and 30 minutes, then pops up with a screen asking you to insert disc 2. TOTALLY UNCOOL GUYS! Not nice at all to stop in the middle of a porno and change discs. Just out of curiosity I popped the thing in my computer and it said the disc contains 4.96 Gigabytes worth of data. For those of you who dont know, modern dual-layer DVD's are able to hold up to 8.5 Gigabytes worth of data. They have been around for about 10 to 11 years.
There is absolutely no excuse for what they did. They could have easily used the entire capacity of disc 1 for just the movie and then put all the extra crap on disc 2. Why they chose to break up a movie in the middle is totally beyond me, but it was a very poor choice. I can only assume the Blu-ray version has everything on one disc. Since this was a rental there is no way for me to get the 2nd disc and finish the movie.
Other than that it was great. Its nice to see the home video market keeping up and surpassing the internet market. A lot of folks were worried that internet porn might eventually kill of the traditional method, especially with the ability to stream HD content easily these days. If this movie was any indication, old-fashioned home video porn will be around a little longer. They just really need to use 10 year old technology to the best of their ability, and present their production properly, instead of making it a hassle. Thats the kind of nonsense that will push people to web based purchases.
