High Fructose Hype

By Oranje
As a fiction writer, I'm a fan of the concept of willing suspension of disbelief. It lets me do what I do. It also lets me enjoy, say Star Wars, without pointing out that there would be no engine or weapon noises in the tenuous gases of space. Simply put, it would be more realistic to watch those scenes with the sound off. But why stop there? They ignore physics pretty regularly as well. That's okay, though, because they tell a story that really resonates. Well, at least the original three films do. Problems can come with the willing suspension of disbelief, however. For example, when a film should not be completely plot driven ? take an adult film, for example ? and it is laying out plot elements and then making them beyond the pale of believability... that's just a recipe for disaster. And so it proves with Cola and the way it hypes itself. Take a moment and read the text on the back of the box cover. Yikes. Combine the fact that people simply don't behave the way that paragraph depicts with the fact that the plot elements are not an overriding feature of this film, and what is left is something that pushes disbelief over the cliff. It should not be this complicated, and reeling in the hyperbole in the description would go a long way.
What do we have here in total? We have Robby D. zoomed in too far and panning in a way where you feel like you're missing a good deal of the action. We have Bibi Jones taking a break from following football to put in something of an effort that is overly blonde and eyelash-ey. And then there's the supporting cast, whose names don't get trademark symbols next to them. Reminds me of professional wrestling, that. The action itself? Relatively decent. You know what you're going to get from Lexi Belle for example: cute, an energetic performance, and those vaguely little girl noises she makes. Those fit maybe a bit better when she was appearing in the Naughty College School Girls series and had the short hair and appropriate look, but now with the more glamour looking version of Lexi, it almost doesn't seem to fit. That said, I'm sure that's just her being her (unlike, say Eve Laurence and her giggle), so it's not something for which blame should be assigned. In Cola, she has a good bed scene with Manuel Ferrara. The setting seemed to limit some of what could have happened, as it's a huge bed and a lot of positions would look silly on it. Good work, but conventional. Kagney Linn Karter has become more the performer I hoped she would be in the last year or so, too. Sure, there's the more extreme stuff, like anal, double anal, gangbang, etc. But that's not what I mean. She's gone away from the platinum blonde look, and seems to be getting more into her performances. Rather than it being modeling with some sex thrown in, she seems to much more be throwing herself into her work. That's on display in Cola, as she has a very energetic scene with the perpetually excellent Manuel Ferrara. Bibi, on the other hand, does seem to be modeling with a bit of sex thrown in. I guess that's part and parcel with what it means to be a contract star, but it really feels like there is a lot of herself she's not throwing into her work. Here it seemed to be eyeing the camera as much as anything. I'll look forward with curiosity to see if she holds that course. I bet she will, as this industry seems to be a means to an end for her. Full credit to Digital Playground for the overall package they put together. The combo pack, with DVD and Blu-Ray, is a great deal (throw in a digital copy and I'd have everything), and despite my ragging on the text,
the box is otherwise well designed and executed. I cannot overstate how important such things really are. But that bit of text ultimately is important for Cola. It's emblematic of a film that did not need to try to have this much plot, this much hyperbole, and be this over-produced. In the hands of another director with a simpler vision, Cola could have worked. With Robby overdoing it as usual, it stood no chance.
