After a nearly year-long hiatus, the Barely Legal line is finally back. However, it's somewhat of a bittersweet moment. Earlier this year director Clive McLean passed away after a fight with cancer. Back in 1999 McLean started the series, bringing years of professional still photography experience to the world of porno to produce one of the best selling series around. He ended up directing a total of 50 installments in addition to some spin-offs like Barely Legal on Vacation and Barely Legal in the City. But the show must go on, especially when we're talking about Hustler's flagship line. Veteran videographer Jane Waters carries on in the series' 51st installment. Instead of following the traditional vignette approach, all five scenes attempt to share a common thread involving sex pics and camera phones, obviously inspired by recent celebrity scandals.

As the video opens, cover girl Teena Fine arrives at her place to find Randy Spears playing with his new video camera. While the video quality isn't perfect, it looks pretty sharp throughout and only suffers from some mild pixelation. The audio is also handled well, with a balanced mix of dialogue, voice-overs, and action. The highlight of the bonus material is the 20-minute behind the scenes featurette. This includes some interviews with the girls as well as some general on-set footage. The only other extras of note are a slide show and six trailers. A Clive McLean tribute or something would have been nice and very appropriate.

Barely Legal 51 is another good installment, but it doesn't really stand out from its predecessors. The attempt to link the scenes via the cell phone story line was pretty weak and felt in most instances. A traditional self-contained vignette approach probably would have worked better. All of the girls are hot and performed well, but the pacing seemed a bit slow at times. Though this has been the case with some of the past volumes too. Despite these issues, the Barely Legal line is still better than most teen-oriented flicks and continues to deliver hot new talent and great production values.
